The 40 millionth Canon EF lens
United Kingdom / Republic of Ireland, 25 April 2008: Canon today celebrates a new milestone in the history of D-SLR photography, as production of the company’s EF lenses – which began in 1987 with the birth of Canon’s EOS system – reaches 40 million. Incredibly, a quarter of these were produced within the last two-and-a-half years. With 67 models, the EF series is the world’s most extensive range of D-SLR lenses.

Sony World Photography AwardsWinner Announced
Vanessa Winship from United Kingdom has been named Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year, revealed at the VIP Gala Awards ceremony in Cannes. Her entry in the Portraiture category has beaten thousands of submissions to win the esteemed title, accompanied by a $25,000 cash prize.
The final decision was made just hours before the ceremony by the Honorary Board, some of the industry’s highest regarded members, including Nan Goldin, Bruce Davidson, Tom Stoddart, Elliott Erwitt and Martine Franck. Over the past weeks they have been deliberating upon the professional photographers’ shortlist, chosen by the World Photographic Academy, and had a final meeting the day of the Awards to agree their decision.

RICOH G600 – water and dust-resistant for outdoor use
April 22, 2008, Tokyo – Ricoh Co., Ltd. (president and CEO: Shiro Kondo) has launched the G600, a new water and dust-resistant digital camera which will now be available along with the popular Caplio 500G Wide (launched in May 2006).
The G600 is smaller and lighter yet it still passes Ricoh‘s shock resistance test for a 1.5 m fall, a test that conforms to US Department of Defense standards. In addition to the 5x optical wide-angle zoom lens (equivalent to 28-140 mm for a 35 mm camera), the G600 continues to provide the same strong set of features as previous models, such as a 1 cm macro function and a flash range of 10 m. It is perfect for customers who want to take pictures in a variety of outdoor activities, such as marine sports, mountain climbing, and fishing.

Festimage - International Image Festival
The 2008 edition of Festimage – International Image Festival will begin on 14 April; it is as of this date that contestants may send in their entries, with the contest lasting until 20 May. This year, the festival will include two competitions – with the Official Prize and the People’s Choice Prize up for grabs. The former, which will include 9.750,00 euros in prize money to be distributed among the top five winners, shall be voted on by an international panel. The latter, which will award 1.000,00 euros to the winner, is to be voted on by the public, via the organizers’ website (www.festimage.org).

Photographers Rights Protest Outside Scotland Yard
NUJ General Secretary, Jeremy Dear, will tomorrow (28/03) stage a one-man protest outside the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police to highlight the failure of law enforcement officers to protect media freedoms.
The union is frustrated that a large number of its photographer members continue to be regularly obstructed from doing their jobs by police officers who don’t understand the law around media freedom. The one-man protest will aim to help senior police officers spot the difference between a protester and photographers covering the protest.
