2007 Travel Photographer Of The Year Competition

The 2007 awards are now open for entries. The closing date is 19th September 2007 so there is plenty of time to take and select your photographs to enter. Anyone can enter the competition – young or old, amateur or professional and there’s a total prize package worth over £50,000. Prizes this year include trips to China, Tanzania and the Swiss Alps plus two other amazing expeditions. That's not all though; there's some of the most sophisticated and highly specified professional photographic equipment around, including an HP Z2100 professional large format printer, the latest top-of-the-range Fujifilm digital camera, Mamiya 7II rangefinder camera plus lenses, a Wacom Cintiq 21 UX and Intuos A5 wide pen tablet, leather print portfolio books from Plastic Sandwich, plus Sekonic lights meters, Peli cases and Giottos tripods.

This year there are also TPOTY bursaries with three of the awards, adding £2,500 to the prize for the overall winner - the Travel Photographer of the Year 2007 - £1,000 to the prize for the winner of New Talent (see below) and £500 to the prize for the Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2007.

New for 2007 are the TPOTY "New Talent" awards. TPOTY has teamed up with Adventure Ecology to give a talented amateur, semi-pro or recently turned professional photographer the chance to really put their photography on the map. The winner will receive photographic and digital imaging tuition to enable them to do everything from shooting through to printing or publishing their own images on the web. They'll also receive a suite of Adobe software to enable them to do this, a personalised leather portfolio from Plastic Sandwich, plus £1000 so that they can add to their photographic kit. Once the winner is prepared and kitted out, they'll join Adventure Ecology on one of their expeditions . They will be profiled in the media and their images exhibited in a central London gallery in 2008.

The competition has three Portfolio categories and a One Shot category. There's also the New Talent category and a separate category for Young Travel Photographers, with the winner of Young TPOTY having their images exhibited in a central London gallery in 2008. Each category has a different theme and between them they cover many of the different aspects of travel photography.

The Travel Photographer of the Year 2007 will be the photographer who the judges feel demonstrates the greatest skill, diversity and creativity in two different portfolio categories.

It's not just about winning though. The competition is an opportunity for you to improve your photography and receive feedback and advice from top professionals. The best images, not just the winners, will feature in TPOTY exhibitions and 'Journey' books. This exposure may well help you to sell your photographs or get commissions, as it has helped many other photographers in recent years. Through TPOTY you also have access to an independent image library if you'd like to submit some images. This facility is there should you wish to use it but it isn't compulsory. If you just want to participate in the competition that's fine.

There is a small entry fee, except for entrants aged 16 and under, but this is scaled to the size of your entry.
