Zoom power: 5x zoom comes to Digital IXUS

The challenge facing Canon’s optical engineers was a tough one: how could they pack more zoom power into a body without sacrificing that unique Digital IXUS style? With the Digital IXUS 970 IS they proved it possible.

A gleaming two-tone metal finish combines with gentle curves to make the 10 Megapixel Digital IXUS 970 IS a natural addition to Canon’s leading compact camera range. Digital IXUS cameras are known for their innovative design; the Digital IXUS 970 IS combines its sleek looks with an extra pinch of imaging power. Its 5x optical zoom and enhanced optical Image Stabilizer (IS) make it the most optically powerful Digital IXUS ever. Together they give you a wider range of framing possibilities, great results in low-light, and shake-free shots when you’re using the zoom.

But how have Canon engineers managed to squeeze so much optical power into so small and stylish a space? It’s all thanks to a brand new four-group lens configuration, which maintains the traditional Digital IXUS responsiveness, quick zooming and straight optical path for the best possible image quality. A key factor in the design of the lens is the inclusion of Canon’s UA lens elements. UA elements correct aberrations, and are an essential part of the compact but powerful Digital IXUS 970 IS lens.

A commitment to high quality images runs right through the Digital IXUS 970 IS. Motion Detection Technology integrates with both the optical Image Stabilizer and Face Detection Technology to help the user get blur-free shots. The fine-tuned auto focus system lets users take advantage of the camera’s new technologies; it enhances low-light performance, for additional sharpness in the dark conditions where the new IS excels.

Bodywork
It’s not just your images that look good. The Digital IXUS 970 IS is easy on the eye from all angles, thanks to a glimmering finish in two metallic tones and a high resolution 2.5” PureColor II LCD screen. The screen delivers a bright, high contrast image which makes it easy to frame your shot, or view the camera’s easy-to-use menu in all conditions, night or day. The camera’s Multi Control Dial makes it simple to change settings, select scene modes, scroll through the menus, and review all your images in playback. Altogether, the Digital IXUS 970 IS provides an exceptional IXUS experience.

Canon Introduces Three New "A"s To Its Powershot Digital Cameras

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., January 23, 2008 – Canon U.S.A., Inc. is expanding its acclaimed and perennially popular A-series of PowerShot digital cameras with the introduction of three new, easy-to-use, easy-to-afford, feature-rich models: the optically image stabilized 8.0 megapixel PowerShot A590 IS; the 8.0 megapixel PowerShot A580, and the creatively color-keyed 7.1 megapixel PowerShot A470 digital cameras.

As always, a high level of technological wizardry – forged over Canon's 70 years of imaging innovation and continually refined to meet the photography needs of every user from the tentative first timer to the passionate photo pro – is part of the birthright of every Canon A-series camera. Add in these cameras' ultra-affordable pricing – ranging from an estimated $129 – $179 each – and the ever-present convenience and cost effectiveness of power driven by two AA batteries (rechargeable recommended, but standard alkaline are acceptable) and it is no small wonder that Canon's PowerShot pedigree remains popular among consumers.

"Whether capturing the expression of delight on a child's face amid a flock of brightly colored birthday balloons; the brilliant sunlight as it reflects off newly fallen snow, or the fiery-orange horizon as day slips into night, these three new PowerShot A-series digital cameras make capturing, saving and sharing memories as simple as 1-2-3," said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A.

PowerShot A590 IS
Ruggedly crafted yet lightweight, the dark silver body of the 8.0 megapixel PowerShot A590 IS camera fits firmly and comfortably into a user's hand. Featuring an impressive 4x (35mm-140mm equivalent) zoom lens, the PowerShot A590 IS model offers a richer feature set than other entry-level PowerShot cameras.

Staking out the upper-middle tier of the PowerShot A-series, the new camera offers users the option of 19 shooting modes, from fully automatic to fully manual operation for greater creative control. The A590 IS camera also features Canon's advanced Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). OIS significantly reduces the effects of camera shake (and the blurry pictures they cause) by actually allowing the lens to shift to compensate for camera movement or shake. Unlike electronic image stabilization systems that essentially mask the movement rather than actually compensating for it, Canon's Optical "lens shift" system preserves the inherent quality of the stabilized image without covering up parts of the image. This OIS technology is even effective when the movement being stabilized is caused by extended telephoto or low-light shooting conditions.

The camera's range can be expanded even further with the use of any one of three optional converter lenses: a 1.75X tele-converter, a 0.7X wide converter and a 52mm close-up lens for eye-catching and frame-filling macro photography. The converter lenses attach over the camera's zoom lens by means of an optional conversion lens adapter.

PowerShot A580
Sharing most of the features and visual virtues of its image stabilized sibling, the PowerShot A590 IS, including a fast 4X (35mm-140mm equivalent) optical zoom lens, the PowerShot A580 camera features an 8.0 megapixel CCD-type image sensor, the option of fully automatic or semi-automatic settings and 16 easily selectable shooting modes. Incorporating a virtually identical body design as its slightly more feature-rich A-series family member, the PowerShot A580 camera is easily distinguished thanks to the pearlescent silver patina of its equally durable shell and easy to hold grip.

PowerShot A470
The successor to last year's successful entry level PowerShot A460 camera, the new 7.1 megapixel A470 model has undergone a striking external makeover, matched dramatically by a number of key internal enhancements and advancements. The immediate eye-impact created by the PowerShot A470 camera stems from its availability in four different color accents – blue, red, orange and gray – over a contoured metallic finish body that highlights the camera's new design and reflects the camera user's individuality, personality and taste.

This camera's technological features compeliment its expressive style. Ideal for first time camera-users, the PowerShot A470 camera features a 3.4X (38mm - 132mm equivalent) optical zoom lens that opens up at a responsive f/3.0 at wide-angle and f/5.8 at the telephoto settings. Despite its positioning as an entry-level camera with style, PowerShot A470 camera offers users the option of exploring their creative sides with manual overrides for ISO speed, exposure compensation and white balance, while enjoying the absolute ease of the automatic setting and taking advantage of the camera's 14 shooting modes.

Shared Advancements:

Face Detection Technology
The joy of capturing precious memories of family get-togethers – without having to make excuses as to why Uncle Joe is deep in the shadows while Aunt Betty's features are completely washed out – is enhanced with Canon Genuine Face Detection Technology. The feature automatically detects, tracks, focuses and optimizes the exposure on up-to nine forward looking human faces in the frame or can lock onto a specific face in the crowd, ensuring that all (or one) are in focus and properly exposed, with or without flash. While the Face Detection algorithm automatically prioritizes up to nine human faces in a scene, it can also be instructed via the Face Select and Track function to lock on to a single face in the crowd, ensuring that the chosen countenance is finely focused, no matter where it appears in the frame. In addition to focus and exposure control, the new A-series cameras now use Face Detection Technology to improve white balance, providing more consistent color accuracy than earlier models.

Motion Detection Technology
Canon's innovative and exclusive Motion Detection technology consolidates motion information for both the camera and the photographic subject and determines whether the subject has moved and what if any adjustments to focus or exposure needs to be made. It will even detect and assess subject movement between each frame, making it quicker and easier to capture a series of images. Additionally, when paired with Canon's Optical Image Stabilization system – offered on the PowerShot A590 IS camera among other PowerShot models – the motion detection system's onboard vibration-detecting gyro senses and compensates for movement due to camera shake, even if the subject remains still.

Beating the Blur
Among the intuitive innovations built in to the new PowerShot A-series models is the Hi-ISO Auto function that works together with Motion Detection Technology to reduced the effect of blur in low light shooting situations by automatically changing and balancing the ISO sensitivity along with the shutter speed. The result can be a beautifully composed and exposed scene of a child blowing out birthday candles in a dimly lit room, or an atmospheric portrait of a beloved grandparent, captured in the soft, ambient afternoon light.

Though equipped with Canon's precise nine-point Autofocus system, the PowerShot A590IS, A580 and A470 models offer an AF-Point Zoom feature that works together with the cameras' advanced Face Detection Technology to enable users to double check facial expressions before snapping photos. Once it has been enabled in the recording menu, AF-Point Zoom can be engaged when photographing people simply by pressing the shutter button halfway. The cameras also feature Canon's Intelligent Orientation Sensor that determines whether a scene is being shot as a vertical or horizontal image. It then automatically rotates the image for quick and easy review on the cameras' bright, sharp and easy-to-read, 115,000-pixel 2.5 inch LCD monitor.

Getting the Red Out
All three of the new A-series PowerShots feature Canon's newly developed Automatic Red Eye Correction, an optional feature that engages while shooting, minimizing the need for correction before printing or sharing images. As an added convenience, the new cameras are compatible with MMC, MMC+ and HC MMC+ memory cards as well as standard SD and SDHC memory cards.

DIGIC III
The "brain" in every new Canon digital camera from the PowerShot A-series to the EOS Pro models is the exclusive DIGIC III imaging processor. This proprietary chip is responsible for the cameras' higher performance levels including faster start up, faster autofocus and quicker shutter response times that leave long lag competitors far behind. What's more, DIGIC III improves both the image quality and the cameras' power consumption, extending the battery life under typical shooting conditions.

Easy Does It
The new "Easy Mode," available exclusively with the PowerShot A590 IS and A580 models, simplifies camera operation even more than the standard Full Auto mode. Beginning with limiting the active control buttons to two – the shutter button with zoom lever and the flash on/off button – and reducing the number of informational icons on the camera's display, Easy Mode effectively eliminates user confusion and enables newcomers to capture memorable moments without feeling overwhelmed or intimidated by the camera's extensive capabilities.

Easy Mode automatically sets the optimal shooting conditions including determining whether to shoot in conventional or macro mode, adjusting the focus and level of flash output for extreme close-ups. What's more, when combined with Face Detection and Motion Detection Technologies, Easy Mode determines the correct exposure for the face even in dark shooting conditions and will adjust the ISO speed to reduce blurring due to subject movement.

Canon "Can Do"
Adding to the Easy Mode ethos that Canon brings to these new PowerShot A-series digital cameras is the new Sunset shooting mode, included as part of the cameras' offered Special Scene modes. A staple on all Canon PowerShot cameras, Special Scene modes utilize Canon's extensive photo expertise to assign the optimal camera settings for the shooting conditions selected. Whether indoors or out; in day or night light (and now with the Sunset setting, in-between too) these A- series cameras "know" how to take the best pictures in a vast array of shooting situations. Other Special Scene modes help make impressive images even when shooting through aquarium glass; across snowy vistas and sandy beaches, or into lush, colorful foliage or at a brilliant burst of fireworks against a black satin sky.

For all of their automatic allure, the new A-series PowerShot cameras offer more experienced users a full complement of useful features and a comprehensive menu of selectable scene settings that can feed the creative impulse or help make the most out of any picture-perfect moment. The PowerShot model A590 IS even offers a full manual setting that maximizes the shooter's creative control, making each image a truly personal expression.

In the Boxes
Scheduled to appear in stores beginning in March 2008, both the PowerShot A590 IS and the PowerShot A580 digital camera kits. include two standard AA alkaline batteries, a 32MB MMC+ Memory card, a USB interface cable, an AV cable, a wrist strap, and Canon's software suite. The kits carry estimated retail prices of $179.99* and $149.99*, respectively. The PowerShot A470 digital camera kit is also scheduled to ship in March, with similar standard accessories at an estimated retail price of $129.99.*

The 6x optical zoom lenses on both cameras benefit from Canon’s 70-year heritage in optics with a range of leading technologies. Aspherical lens elements ensure maximum sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range, while the lens-shift type optical Image Stabilizer (IS) combats blur without affecting image quality.

Users can take zooming further with the incorporated Digital Tele-Converter and Safety Zoom – offering all the benefits of digital zoom without the danger of interpolation. The PowerShot A650 IS also features Canon’s improved Image Inspection Tool, which allows users to quickly check key parts of an image at extra-high magnification on the integrated 2.5’’ LCD.

DIGIC III: the power behind great photos
As well as assuring fast performance, superior colour reproduction and accurate white balance in both models, Canon’s DIGIC III processor powers a range of features designed to assist photographers of all levels. Advanced Noise Reduction Technology safeguards images against graininess, even at high ISO speeds. Face Detection AF/AE/FE locates up to 9 faces in any scene before optimising focus, exposure and flash for perfect people shots. And for flash shots affected by red-eye, improved Red-Eye Correction during playback is included. This innovative system uses Face Detection Technology to identify faces and correct red-eye in captured images – while ensuring that no other part of the image is affected in the process. Red-eye correction can also be performed manually if needed.

Anti-blur features
A combination of technologies allows the PowerShot A650 IS and A720 IS to produce great shots with minimal risk of image blur. Both cameras feature Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer, first developed for Canon’s professional EF lenses for the world-leading EOS SLR photography system. The optical Image Stabilizer uses lens-shift technology to counteract the effects of camera shake. As a second line of defence against camera shake, the PowerShot A650 IS also incorporates Auto ISO Shift, a manually selected feature that boosts ISO just enough to avoid blur.

A range of high ISO features avoid the blur caused by subject movement, as well as camera shake when low light would normally require a longer exposure. Both cameras feature user-selected settings up to ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto, which prioritises high ISO settings for better low light snapshots. For particularly dark conditions, the PowerShot A650 IS incorporates a special ISO 3200 scene mode, which captures images at 1600x1200 resolution – perfect for postcard size prints.

Total versatility
With 19 and 21 different shooting modes respectively, the PowerShot A720 IS and A650 IS ensure that novice users can get great results with minimal effort – even in situations with tricky lighting. For more experienced photographers, full manual control offers wide scope for experimentation. Both models also incorporate Canon’s My Colors, which can be used to apply effects and enhancements during shooting.

A new Image Resize function users can downsize full-resolution images to 1600x1200, 640x480 and 320x240 sizes. This is equally useful for conserving storage space or preparing images for email or the Web.

Movie moments
With both the PowerShot A650 IS and A720 IS, users can capture their memories in smooth 30fps VGA movies with sound – either in standard mode or a new LP (Long Play) mode, which offers movies of half the file size without compromising on resolution or frame rate.

Canon's Three New Digital ELPH Cameras

Canon-SD800.jpgLAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., September 14, 2006 – America's love affair with Canon's Digital ELPH cameras is heating up once again as three streamlined new sisters join the PowerShot Digital ELPH family – just in time for the popular camera line's tenth anniversary. Reprising the discrete, petite profiles, curved bodies, smooth lines, and lustrous eye-catching allure that define the outer-design of Digital ELPH camera models, the 10.0 megapixel PowerShot SD900 Digital ELPH and the 7.1 megapixel PowerShot SD800 IS and PowerShot SD40 Digital ELPH cameras take the marriage of style and substance to a new level. They do it with an array of new user-friendly features, innovations and enhancements ranging from a dramatically faster response time to a new face detection autofocus system that keeps subjects in focus no matter where in the frame they appear.

Arriving in stores in October, these power-packed digital denizens of pocket or purse continue to champion the go anywhere, shoot anytime philosophy that keeps picture-taking fun and preserves memorable moments in a flash.

"The PowerShot Digital ELPH line of cameras has always been characterized by the sleek contoured look, the full array of features and the extraordinary picture quality they deliver," states Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc. "These newest Digital ELPH cameras continue that tradition of innovation, eye appeal, ease of use and imaging excellence, and will no doubt continue to delight our users and confound our competitors."

The Eyes Have It
The brain behind these beauties is DIGIC III, the newest iteration of Canon's ultra-efficient (and proprietary) image processor. Shared thus far only with Canon's new flagship PowerShot G7 model - it is the DIGIC III chip that accounts for these cameras' higher performance levels including faster start up, autofocus and shutter response times; improved maximum processing speed; and of course, enhanced image quality and more efficient power consumption; resulting in extended battery life under typical shooting conditions.

What's more, thanks to the DIGIC III chip's more aggressive noise reduction, these Digital ELPH cameras are able to shoot at ISO equivalent speed ratings from 80 to as high as 1600. This increased sensitivity at the top-end allows the use of faster shutter speeds, significantly reducing camera shake and subject blur during hand held low-light photography.

With Canon's new Face Detection AF/AE technology (working in concert with Canon's 9-point Autofocus system), all three of these Digital ELPH models can detect, lock on and track up to nine human faces in a scene simply by pressing the shutter button halfway. The face detection algorithm automatically prioritizes and selects the optimum subject and not simply the closest face (based on Canon's Intelligent Scene Analysis/iSAPS technology). It will then optimize the focus and exposure to ensure the best possible results for easy picture taking moments.

All three of the new Digital ELPH cameras make taking and sharing better pictures simple, thanks to such onboard innovations as:

Expanded special scene modes that include ISO 3200 and Aquarium settings. The extremely high-speed ISO 3200 mode enables shooting without a tripod and flash were previously required, while Aquarium mode reproduces vivid images of swimming fish inside an aquarium without blurring;

A widescreen 16:9 ratio resolution setting that facilitates creating panoramic prints or image “slide shows” viewable on widescreen format televisions;

There’s even a convenient 3x2 composition guide which displays horizontal gray bars at the top and bottom as an overlay on the LCD screen so that users can compose and shoot their images in the proportion best suited to the size print they wish to make (typically 4x 6-inches);

A new My Category feature to streamline the categorizing of still and movie images for quicker and easier printing or playback;

A Safety zoom function allows users to comfortably explore digital zoom without sacrificing image quality while a new Digital Tele-converter digitally emulates traditional optical tele-converters.

The PowerShot SD900 Digital ELPH: Titanium Body and Ten Megapixels Too
The flagship of the Digital ELPH camera line, the 10-megapixel PowerShot SD900 Digital ELPH takes the attractive and comfortable feel of the "perpetual curve design" and for the first time ever, renders that body in strong and durable yet lightweight Titanium. The result is a high-res digital camera with smooth lines, an elegant satin finish, and an impressive (though petite) package of top-tier photo features. About the size of a deck of playing cards, the SD900 Digital ELPH camera measures fractionally more than an inch thick with its 3x (37-111 mm equivalent) optical zoom lens retracted safely into the case; a mere 2.35 inches high and less than 3.6 inches long.

The successor to Canon's popular SD550 Digital ELPH camera, the SD900 also features a brilliantly enhanced, 2.5- inch, 230,000-pixel, color TFT LCD screen with a wide viewing angle making images easier to preview and review, and camera menus easier to read in a wide range of lighting conditions. For still more flexible digital imaging power, the SD900 Digital ELPH camera also includes a new 1.4x/2.3x digital tele-converter for extended shooting capabilities. Finally, for those who wish to shoot dramatically higher resolution video sequences, the camera's XGA 15fps movie mode is just the ticket. When combined with the new optionally available high capacity 4GB SDHC memory cards, this digital dynamo can capture action for up to 33 minutes per clip. The Canon PowerShot SD900 Digital ELPH carries an estimated selling price of $499.99*.

The PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH: Simple, Sophisticated and Image Stabilized
The 7.1 megapixel SD800 IS Digital ELPH camera is the second and newest Optical Image Stabilized Digital ELPH model in the PowerShot line, and is now the top-of-the-line Digital ELPH IS entry. Canon based the optical image stabilization system on advancements made in the development of the company's EF and video lenses, and then scaled it down to fit the diminutive Digital ELPH camera profile. Unlike electronic or "digital image stabilization systems" that typically degrade image quality, Canon's lens shift-type stabilization system preserves maximum optical quality while providing up to three stops of shake correction in shutter speed equivalent.

This new SD800 IS model features a number of significant advancements, including improved low-light performance due to the combination of optical IS and a top ISO speed of 1600, and for the first time in the Digital ELPH series, an optical 3.8x wide range zoom lens (28-105mm equivalent), which employs Canon's UA lens technology that permits a longer zoom capability in a smaller amount of space.

The camera's large, 2.5-inch high resolution LCD screen has been enhanced to approximately 207,000 pixels with a bright, wide, easy to read viewing area and is set attractively into the Digital ELPH's rugged, stainless steel shell with its iconic perpetual curve design. In keeping with a decade of ELPH philosophy that proclaims, "great things come in small packages," this pocket-sized photo powerhouse measures just under an inch thick with lens retracted, 2.28 inches high and 3.52 inches long. The Canon PowerShot SD800 IS Digital ELPH carries an estimated selling price of $399.99*.

The PowerShot SD40 Digital ELPH: Elegant, Economical and Easy-to-Use
The fashion plate of the Digital ELPH line of cameras, Canon's new SD40 Digital ELPH packs 7.1 megapixels of righteous resolution into a color-keyed, stainless steel case that bespeaks luxury and is a must have accessory for a memory-making night on the town. Similar in design to its 5.0 megapixel predecessor (SD30 Digital ELPH model), the SD40 Digital ELPH series offers four new elegant shell tones in Twilight Sepia, a dark rich brown with gold accents; Precious Rose, a blushing pink attention-getter; Noble Blue, a shade worthy of the finest designer navy suit and, the soft yet solid sophistication of Olive Grey.

With any of these four fashion finishes, the SD40 Digital ELPH camera is a formidable, fine and fun to use camera. From the virtuosity of its 7.1 megapixel CCD and its retractable 2.4x optical zoom lens (38-90 mm equivalent) to its easy-to-read 1.8-inch backlit LCD monitor with 15 brightness settings the SD40 Digital ELPH camera is Canon to the core.

Canon supplied the PowerShot SD40 Digital ELPH camera with an easy to use camera station that serves as a charger, enables Hi-Speed USB 2.0 for direct printing and image transfer to a PC, and is even supplied with a wireless remote to facilitate slide show displays when sharing images on a television screen. A mere 0.94-inches thick with the lens retracted, 1.78-inches high and 3.78 inches long, the camera body weighs in at a very modest 3.7 ounces. The Canon PowerShot SD40 Digital ELPH camera carries an estimated selling price of $349.99*.

10 Years of Iconic Style
2006 marks the 10th Anniversary of Canon's ELPH brand. Canon pioneered the stylish camera concept in 1996 with the first ELPH camera, an APS film model designed to take great pictures and fit stylishly into the consumer lifestyle. With each PowerShot Digital ELPH camera that Canon introduces, the company continues to focus on style, fashion and the distinctive look and feel of the ELPH line, a look that many competitors have often imitated, but never duplicated. Canon's new PowerShot Digital ELPH cameras honor the ELPH heritage of ultimate style while incorporating the latest imaging technologies, such as the DIGIC III image processor.

Canon-G7.jpgLAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., September 14, 2006 – Canon's PowerShot G7 digital camera, the new flagship of Canon's ever popular fleet of PowerShot digital cameras will be sailing into stores beginning in October, equipped with a boatload of Canon's newest technological achievements and user-friendly features and carrying an estimated selling price of $599.99.* Designed to delight even the most die-hard photo enthusiast, the 10-megapixel PowerShot G7 digital camera continues the tradition of imaging excellence, innovation and ease of use that began when the PowerShot G1 was introduced a mere six years ago.

Compact and comfortable to hold, handle and use, the PowerShot G7 digital camera is an aesthetic treat as well, harking back to the look and feel of classic Canon cameras. From its retro "wet black matte finish," leather-toned grip and the detailed knurling and analog-style "click-click" of the camera's top side ISO Speed Dial and Shooting Mode Dial, to the stylish metallic accents of the body's aluminum-finish parts and metallic-finish bayonet ring, this PowerShot G7 conveys a sense of "camera-ness" rarely encountered in the world of digital photography. Photo panache and feel appeal not withstanding, the PowerShot G7 remains true to the G-Class tradition by offering an array of the industry's advanced photographic features.

"In the PowerShot G7 we have created the ultimate prosumer compact digital camera for the discerning hobbyist, the photo enthusiast and for those who require uncompromising photo quality for business and industrial applications," states Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc. "Faster, more responsive, more efficient and easier to use, thanks to Canon's proprietary new DIGIC III image processor and a newly enhanced and intuitive user interface, the PowerShot G7 digital camera also offers users a greater level of creative control and flexible shooting options than ever before."

The Eyes Have It
The "brain" of the new camera is DIGIC III, the newest iteration of Canon's ultra-efficient (and proprietary) image processor. Making its debut on the PowerShot G7 digital camera (along with Canon's three newest Digital ELPH models) the DIGIC III chip accounts for the camera's higher performance levels including faster start up, autofocus and shutter response times, and of course, improved image quality and more efficient power consumption; resulting in extended battery life under typical shooting conditions.

What's more, thanks to the DIGIC III chip's more aggressive noise reduction, the PowerShot G7 digital camera is able to shoot at ISO equivalent speed ratings from 80 to as high as 1600. This increased sensitivity at the top-end allows users to select faster shutter speeds, significantly reducing camera shake and subject blur during hand held low-light photography.

With Canon's new Face Detection AF/AE technology (working in concert with Canon's 9-point Autofocus system), the camera can detect, lock on and track up to nine human faces in a scene simply by pressing the shutter button halfway. The face detection algorithm automatically prioritizes and selects the optimum subject and not simply the closest face (based on Canon's Intelligent Scene Analysis/iSAPS technology). It will then optimize the focus and exposure to ensure the best possible results for even easier picture taking moments.

Reflections in an Image Stabilized Glass Eye
True to Canon's tradition of optical excellence, the PowerShot G7 digital camera is equipped with a fast and sharp f/2.8-4.8 6X optical zoom lens (35-210mm, 35mm equivalent). Canon's specialized SR coating augments the all glass lens, the first time this lens coating technology has been applied in a compact digital camera. In combination with the lens' aspherical elements, the SR coating helps reduce flare and ghosting, delivering a cleaner image to the camera's CCD sensor in the process. The precision lens also features an extreme macro setting that focuses down to one centimeter.

The PowerShot G7 digital camera also features a Lens-Shift type optical image stabilization system that can help defeat the effects of camera shake in low light situations, or while shooting handheld. This optical image stabilization system is based on advancements made in the development of Canon's EF lenses and video lenses. Unlike electronic or "digital image stabilization systems" that typically degrade image quality, the PowerShot G7 digital camera's lens shift-type preserves maximum optical performance while providing up to three stops of shake correction in shutter speed equivalent.

The PowerShot G7 digital camera's new 1.4x/2.3x, onboard, digital tele-converter achieves the digital equivalent of having an actual teleconverter lens attached to the camera. The camera also offers a new Safety Zoom that enables non-stop digital zoom operation at reduced resolution settings up to the maximum magnification possible before the image begins to degrade. Optional optical wide-angle (WC-DC58B), telephoto (TC-DC58C) and close-up (58mm 250D) supplementary lenses are also available for the PowerShot G7 digital camera.**

Admiring the View
The PowerShot G7 digital camera is equipped with a newly enhanced, 2.5- inch color LCD screen with approximately 207,000 pixels, a wide viewing angle and 15 brightness settings making it easier to read the display menus and easier to preview and review subjects and scenes. Adding to the ease of composing a picture in the proper print proportion, the PowerShot G7 is appointed with optional grid lines and a 3:2 aspect ratio print display overlay. Simply put, this convenient composition guide overlays horizontal gray bars at the top and bottom of the LCD screen so that photographers can compose and shoot their images in the proportion best suited to the print size they wish to make (typically 4"x 6").

Making Special Scenes
When it comes to special scenes, the PowerShot G7 camera makes a quantum leap over its predecessor with the addition of 13 new modes for a variety of scenic shooting situations. Notable among the special scene modes (which include portrait, night snapshot, kids & pets, indoor, foliage, snow, beach and fireworks settings etc.) are the new ISO 3200 and Aquarium settings that permit low light, no-flash photography in situations where using a flash would ruin a picture by bouncing back off aquarium glass or other reflective surfaces. For those whose photographic passions take them beyond the water's edge and beneath its surface, the PowerShot G7 camera also has an underwater special scene mode. In order to actually take the camera underwater, users must safely ensconce it in the optional waterproof case WP-DC11, specifically designed for the PowerShot G7 and rated safe to depths of up to 130 feet.

Improving upon Excellence
A combination of technological advancements, as well as the introduction of the DIGIC III image processor has allowed the PowerShot G7 digital camera to become the fastest G series camera to date, with a startup time approximately twice as fast as its predecessor at 1.4 seconds (LCD monitor on). Other firsts on a G series model include Optical Image Stabilization and the addition of 13 new special scene modes for a variety of shooting situations. The PowerShot G7 model also adds the "My Colors" function. Users have added flexibility with an increased ISO sensitivity, which ranges from 80-1600, or as high as ISO 3200 in the special scene mode. With the enhanced noise reduction, users can confidently shoot in low light scenes.

Canon’s new Digital IXUS 800 IS

Canon is pleased to announce the launch of the Digital IXUS that advanced photographers have been waiting for – the 6.0 Megapixel Digital IXUS 800 IS. Redefining the boundaries of compact camera design, the new flagship of the Digital IXUS range fits a 4x optical zoom lens and Canon's optical Image Stabiliser (IS) technology into an incredibly slender body.

Exquisitely styled with a unique 'Curvature and Stream' design, the camera incorporates a host of cutting-edge features and shooting options to satisfy the most demanding of photographers, including:

ISO 800 and optical IS for flash-free indoor shooting
Canon's DIGIC II image processor, iSAPS and 9-point AiAF [1]
Wide viewing angle 2.5" LCD screen
16 shooting modes
My Colors photo effects
Widescreen (16:9) stills recording
30fps VGA movies
"IXUS is synonymous with distinctive style and leading technology," comments Mogens Jensen, head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe. "The Digital IXUS 800 IS adds another dimension to the range with a new level of functionality that will thrill serious photo enthusiasts."

4x optical zoom with Image Stabiliser
Smaller, lighter camera bodies are more susceptible to camera shake from handheld shots, especially in low light situations. The Digital IXUS 800 IS employs the same optical Image Stabiliser (IS) technology used in Canon's professional EF lenses to reduce the image blur caused by camera shake. IS allows for sharper flash-free shooting by enabling photographers to shoot at shutter speeds up to 3 stops slower. It also allows for steadier macro shooting when using the camera's 2cm Macro mode. To incorporate this technology into such a compact space, a new IS processor chip was developed by Canon's engineering team. The new chip accurately controls the movement of lens elements, delivers fast, precise shake correction – processing up to 4000 signals per second – and contributes to lower power consumption.

The 4x optical zoom lens incorporates an Ultra-High Refractive Index Aspherical (UA) lens to achieve a focal length range of 35-140mm (35mm equivalent) while allowing the camera to maintain a slender profile. The camera retains a real-image optical viewfinder despite its compact size, enabling users to frame without the LCD and further extend the camera's impressive 240-shot [2] battery capacity.

Increased ISO speed
The Digital IXUS 800 IS incorporates ISO 800 to facilitate flash-free shooting indoors - ideal in low-light environments where the use of flash is not desirable or appropriate, such as churches and concerts. A new High ISO Auto setting automatically sets exposure using the higher range of ISO sensitivities, prioritising faster shutter speeds to avoid blur from camera shake or moving subjects.

Pricing and availability
The Digital IXUS 800 IS will be available from April 2006, priced at £399.00 RRP inc. VAT/ €589.99 RRP inc. VAT.

New Canon Powershot S80 Digital Camera With 8 Megapixel Resolution

canon_s80_586x225.jpg

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., Aug. 22, 2005 — Canon's elegant new flagship PowerShot S80 digital camera features 8.0 megapixels of resolution and a 28mm wide lens in a sleek package that offers photo enthusiasts and entry-level users a large 2.5-inch LCD screen for easy viewing, a high-quality XGA movie mode, high-speed USB 2.0 support for quick transfer and a new easy-to-use interface.

Picking up many popular features of its predecessor, the PowerShot S70 model, the PowerShot S80 digital camera retains Canon's powerful, high quality, wide angle UA (Ultra High Refractive Index Glass Aspherical) lens with a 3.6x wide-angle optical zoom (35mm film equivalent: 28-100mm). The camera allows users to capture a wider image area than most other compact digital cameras on the market, and with Canon's DIGIC II image processor plus 8.0 megapixels of resolution, the camera keeps image quality at its utmost

The Canon PowerShot S80 offers users 21 different shooting modes, allowing the camera to effectively handle a variety of situations. As with the S70 model, there are five modes in the Creative Zone, plus 12 new Special Scene modes as well as the My Colors mode, Stitch Assist Mode and Movie Mode. The 12 new Special Scene modes include Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Underwater, Indoor, Kids & Pets, Night Snapshot and Digital Macro.

Also new to the S80 model is a real time histogram which is displayed on the new 2.5-inch LCD screen while shooting. It can be turned on and off in the shooting menu. When the LCD screen is turned on and set to display information, the histogram is shown in the bottom left corner of the LCD screen. In previous models, exposure compensation values were displayed by a scale shown at the bottom of the screen, which made it difficult to check the compensated exposure. When the PowerShot S80 digital camera is set for live histogram display, exposure compensation settings are displayed numerically, taking up much less space and making adjustments easier to evaluate as a result.

True to the PowerShot tradition, the PowerShot S80 model has many of the latest advances in Canon technology including the proprietary DIGIC II imaging processor. The processor enhances picture definition, vibrancy and quality, while helping increase the speed of the camera's startup, autofocus, shutter response, playback and image processing speed while reducing power consumption by 35 percent compared to the original DIGIC chip. Image transfer speed is accelerated (when used with a USB 2.0 compatible computer, printer or other peripheral), thanks to the inclusion of a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port. The USB 2.0 port is backwards compatible (at no increased speed) with computers featuring standard USB 1.1 connections.

Canon PowerShot S2 IS Camera

canonS2.jpgThe five megapixel PowerShot S2 IS digital camera provides users with the high quality resolution, color and low noise that consumers have come to expect from Canon. The camera's fast f/2.7(W)-f/3.5(T) image stabilized 6.0-72.0mm 12x zoom lens (36-432mm equivalent) makes tack-sharp long telephoto shooting positively practical. When the optical zoom is augmented with the camera's 4x digital zoom, the maximum focal length effectively becomes equivalent to a 1728mm lens on a 35mm camera. Despite its extensive optical range, the lens is ultra-compact and retracts securely into the camera when it is powered down. In addition, there are two levels of close-up shooting, Macro and Super Macro. Super Macro mode enables extreme close-up shooting to 0 cm from the end of lens barrel, for creative shooting — great for shooting flowers to use in scrapbooks, on invitations and more.

With Optical Image Stabilizer (IS), Ultrasonic Motor (USM) and a UD lens element, the PowerShot S2 IS's 12x optical zoom is no ordinary lens. Optical IS works to counteract camera shake - even at full zoom and in low light conditions - for ultra sharp photos and movies. USM provides super responsive, smooth and near silent zoom, while the UD element reduces chromatic aberrations for razor sharp images with superb colour accuracy

The DIGIC II processor delivers incredible 2.4 fps continuous shooting², super fast auto focus and rapid start up, plus superb colour rendering and white balance accuracy for natural skin tones and rich, vibrant colours.

Combine the powerful lens with capacity to shoot up to 60 minutes of VGA quality movies¹ with full stereo sound. A dedicated movie button gets you shooting immediately in either 15 or 30fps to ensure you never miss those once in a lifetime moments. The Photo In Movie feature allows full resolution digital stills to be taken whilst shooting a movie.
