Festimage has another winner from India
For the second year in a row, first prize in Festimage goes to India. This year’s winner is Abhijit Nandi, a fellow countryman of Arup Ghosh, last year’s winner. Second prize goes to Frenchman Bernard Muller, with third prize going to Daniel Benito Machado Hernández, a Uruguayan creator of digital art living in Japan. The 4th place entry is that of Oleksandr Hnatenko, an Austrian of Ukrainian origin, and in 5th place is Spaniard. The People’s Choice Prize was won by Sergey Kozoderov, from Kazakhstan. The 1st prize amounts to 5.000 euros. The other prizewinners receive 2.500, 1.000, 750 and 500 euros. The people’s choice prizewinner gets 1.000 euros.
In all, there were 2001 entrants from 63 countries at the third annual Festimage, of which 1499 were accepted into the contest. For the first evaluation of the projects we put together an Admissions Panel which included José Mamede, from Brazil, Juanjo Martín, from Spain, Armands Grundmanis, from Latvia, and Roman Voloshin, from the Ukraine. The scores awarded to the projects by this panel also determined the finalists in the competition.
The Final Panel, which selected the five prizewinners from among the finalists, consisted of Concepción Alarcón, from Spain, Edith Dedyk, from Brazil, Eugen Radescu, from Romania, Per Valentin, from Denmark, and Dmitry Yershov, from Russia.
After the Festimage finalists’ projects are reproduced on paper, they shall be put on display at the Cinema-Theater Gallery in Chaves, from 8 to 31 July. In turn, the works of some of the finalists shall be enlarged onto large-format canvas and put on display on a few façades on streets in the city’s historical center. At the same time, all accepted works will be projected on two giant screens set up in the city’s leisure areas. These two outdoor exhibits will take place from 8 July to 31 August.
Festimage is an event promoted by the City Council of Chaves, a city located in the north of Portugal. The entire event occurs over the Internet, at the site www.festimage.org, which comprises versions in six languages.
After three annual events, Festimage has had 5.217 entrants from 92 countries. In these three annual Festimage, the majority of contestants has always been from Spain, Brazil, Germany and Portugal. Photographers Rights Protest Outside Scotland Yard
NUJ General Secretary, Jeremy Dear, will tomorrow (28/03) stage a one-man protest outside the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police to highlight the failure of law enforcement officers to protect media freedoms.
The union is frustrated that a large number of its photographer members continue to be regularly obstructed from doing their jobs by police officers who don’t understand the law around media freedom. The one-man protest will aim to help senior police officers spot the difference between a protester and photographers covering the protest.
Last year a set of guidelines on dealing with the media was agreed between the NUJ and the Association of Chief Police Officers, an extension of guidelines already agreed with the Metropolitan Police. However, cases have continued to surface of police officers taking action that is not within their legal powers. Most cases involve officers obstructing photographers from taking photos and the confiscation or deletion of pictures once they have been taken.
There are also examples of journalists being arrested, or threatened with arrest, because they have refused to stop taking photos and in other cases photographers have had their equipment seized. Many NUJ members have reported being physically and mentally intimidated by the police and some cases have included actual physical violence.
Photographers regularly criticise the police for their handling of the media at major events, particularly public demonstrations where officers often fail to draw a sufficient distinction between protestors and members of the press who are reporting on the event.
Jeremy Dear will deliver a letter to New Scotland Yard highlighting the union’s concerns and will stage his protest to help demonstrate the differences between a protestor and press photographers. A letter from the NUJ Parliamentary Group to the Home Secretary will also be delivered to the Home Office tomorrow to raise the issue at the highest levels.
Speaking in advance of the protest, Jeremy Dear said: “It’s a shame that we have to hold a stunt like this to help the police spot the difference between a protestor and a press photographer. It really isn’t that difficult.
“What’s really frustrating is that guidelines are already in place which should deal with the problems we experience. We’re not even campaigning for a change to the rules. All we want is for the policy that currently exists to be properly enforced.
“Although the one-man protest is intended to be a little light-hearted, this is a really serious issue. Police officers are preventing photographers from reporting on important events with action that is at times bordering on harassment. In an open and democratic society it’s vital that photographers and members of the media are free to report on what is going on in the world. Police officers need to understand their responsibilities when it comes to respecting media freedom.”

2007 Travel Photographer Of The Year Competition
The 2007 awards are now open for entries. The closing date is 19th September 2007 so there is plenty of time to take and select your photographs to enter. Anyone can enter the competition – young or old, amateur or professional and there’s a total prize package worth over £50,000. Prizes this year include trips to China, Tanzania and the Swiss Alps plus two other amazing expeditions. That's not all though; there's some of the most sophisticated and highly specified professional photographic equipment around, including an HP Z2100 professional large format printer, the latest top-of-the-range Fujifilm digital camera, Mamiya 7II rangefinder camera plus lenses, a Wacom Cintiq 21 UX and Intuos A5 wide pen tablet, leather print portfolio books from Plastic Sandwich, plus Sekonic lights meters, Peli cases and Giottos tripods.
This year there are also TPOTY bursaries with three of the awards, adding £2,500 to the prize for the overall winner - the Travel Photographer of the Year 2007 - £1,000 to the prize for the winner of New Talent (see below) and £500 to the prize for the Young Travel Photographer of the Year 2007.
New for 2007 are the TPOTY "New Talent" awards. TPOTY has teamed up with Adventure Ecology to give a talented amateur, semi-pro or recently turned professional photographer the chance to really put their photography on the map. The winner will receive photographic and digital imaging tuition to enable them to do everything from shooting through to printing or publishing their own images on the web. They'll also receive a suite of Adobe software to enable them to do this, a personalised leather portfolio from Plastic Sandwich, plus £1000 so that they can add to their photographic kit. Once the winner is prepared and kitted out, they'll join Adventure Ecology on one of their expeditions . They will be profiled in the media and their images exhibited in a central London gallery in 2008.
The competition has three Portfolio categories and a One Shot category. There's also the New Talent category and a separate category for Young Travel Photographers, with the winner of Young TPOTY having their images exhibited in a central London gallery in 2008. Each category has a different theme and between them they cover many of the different aspects of travel photography.
The Travel Photographer of the Year 2007 will be the photographer who the judges feel demonstrates the greatest skill, diversity and creativity in two different portfolio categories.
It's not just about winning though. The competition is an opportunity for you to improve your photography and receive feedback and advice from top professionals. The best images, not just the winners, will feature in TPOTY exhibitions and 'Journey' books. This exposure may well help you to sell your photographs or get commissions, as it has helped many other photographers in recent years. Through TPOTY you also have access to an independent image library if you'd like to submit some images. This facility is there should you wish to use it but it isn't compulsory. If you just want to participate in the competition that's fine.
There is a small entry fee, except for entrants aged 16 and under, but this is scaled to the size of your entry.
