Nikon Speedlight SB-900 Flash Unit Announced

NikonSpeedliteSB-900.jpgAmsterdam, the Netherlands, 1 July 2008 - Nikon Europe today introduced a brand-new flagship Speedlight - the Nikon SB-900 – that offers exceptional high-speed, high-power operation combined with an extended zoom range. The SB-900 incorporates a moving diffuser and light source that can zoom from 17mm to 200mm in just 1.2 seconds while maintaining an even light distribution. The versatile new flash provides a choice of three illumination patterns (centre-weighted/standard/even) that can be selected to suit a particular subject.

“Nikon Speedlights are widely regarded to be the best in the business” said Robert Cristina, Manager Professional Products and NPS, Nikon Europe. “The new SB-900 propels flash lighting into the future with really exciting creative opportunities available at the touch of a button” he added.

The SB-900 is perfectly adapted to both DX and FX formats, and will automatically select the appropriate light distribution pattern according to the sensor format of the camera to which it is attached. The SB-900 also automatically detects the fitting of fluorescent or incandescent colour filters, instructing the camera to switch to the appropriate white balance setting. Designed for today’s high speed digital image capture, the SB-900 handles repeated firing at high power with an improved booster circuit for high-speed recycling and includes a built-in thermal sensing system that protects the unit against overheating.

It is fully compatible with the other Speedlights and accessories of the acclaimed Nikon Creative Lighting System and can be easily incorporated into multiple-flash lighting set-ups. Bounce flash capability is provided through a head that can be tilted up by 90º and down by 11º and rotated horizontally through 180º, making the SB-900 an essential accessory that opens up many creative opportunities to the photographer.

The SB-900 will be available as of 25th July 2008

Main Features

Multi-step auto zoom covers wide 17-200mm zoom range (24-105mm:SB-800)

Three illumination patterns (standard, center-weighted and even) are available to match each shooting environment

Automatically detects Nikon FX and Nikon DX formats and selects suitable light distribution

Improved booster circuit for high-speed recycle time: Recycle time using four AA-size batteries is almost equal to the SB-800 with five
AA-size batteries

New AF-Assist illumination covers a wide 20-105 mm focal range compatible with the new Multi-CAM3500 FX/DX AF sensor

Firmware update via Nikon D3 and D700 is possible (world's first*)

Thermal Cut-out function limits the number of flashes to avoid deterioration of light emitting parts caused by continuous flash firing

Automatically detects color filters (fluorescent or incandescent), enabling camera to control color temperature according to filter information from SB-900

Optional Water Guard WG-AS1 (for D3), WG-AS2 (for D300), and WG-AS3 (for D700) is useful for protecting the camera's hot shoe contact when the SB-900 is mounted on these Nikon digital SLR cameras

*The world's first flash unit firmware update function via a digital SLR camera as of July 1, 2008 (according to research conducted by NIKON CORPORATION).

Nikon Camera Control Pro Software

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of its exciting new Camera Control Pro remote control software, successor to the Nikon Capture 4 Camera Control released in 2003. The new software enables simplified remote control of many Nikon digital SLR functions from a personal computer, and includes advanced features such as “Viewer” that provide substantial improvements in operation. Camera Control Pro is compatible with Nikon’s latest software, including Capture NX (to be released in Summer 2006), for smoother image processing from shooting to transfer and storage.

Major Features

Take Control of Your Photography — Remotely
Using the included USB or Firewire cable and/or optional WiFi adapters for select models, Nikon Camera Control Pro enables you to capture unique images no matter what the subject. Imagine positioning the camera in a remote location at a sporting event so you can freeze the end of the race right at the finish line, or from a unique angle above the playing field so you can relive that great score. Or keep yourself out of the picture at weddings to capture candid shots of guests as they arrive. Wildlife and nature photographers will love setting up the camera near a bird’s nest, or in a bluff so they can take that once-in-a-lifetime shot. Industrial photographers can safely place the camera at special locations to record critical elements of the manufacturing process. And law enforcement and government agencies can now use their cameras for continuous surveillance purposes using the software’s built-in intervalometer function. The possibilities are endless.

Viewer function
Enables captured images to be viewed within the software. Viewer window contains the following buttons: “Previous image”, “Next image”, “Show focus area”, “Fit to screen”, “100%”, “50%”, and “Delete”.

Tone Compensation Curves can be saved in camera
In newer Nikon digital SLRs, including the D2Xs, customized Tone Compensation Curve data can be saved to tailor the camera’s behavior to the photographer’s vision and improve efficiency when using multiple cameras at the same time.

Improved graphic user interface
A simulated (camera) LCD panel on the computer screen performs the same function as the camera’s viewfinder display, and has been modified to be consistent with those used in the latest cameras for smoother operation. It is also possible to control the camera from your personal computer without having to use the control menu on the computer (the control menu can be hidden and the simulated [camera] LCD panel used exclusively).

Compatible with Nikon’s Image Authentication Software*
Image data can be transferred and stored without affecting the authentication function.
* Available in summer 2006

Compatible with Wireless LAN
In addition to supporting USB cable connections, Camera Control Pro offers compatibility with the optional Wireless Transmitter models WT-2 and WT-3*. When attached to a digital SLR, the WT-2 and WT-3* enable remote shooting and setting via a wireless LAN over WiFi.
* Available in summer 2006

Nikon Image Authentication Software

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of its all-new Image Authentication Software, designed exclusively for use with the Nikon D2Xs digital SLR. This software enables the authentication of an image captured by the camera and can determine whether or not it has been altered since capture. Image data can be used as a critical link in the “chain of evidence” for verifying image authenticity by law enforcement and government agencies, the media, insurance companies and for a variety of other business applications. Nikon Image Authentication Software allows easy, secure authentication of images for a wide range of requirements.
Image data as well as information attached to the image are verified to determine whether an image captured by the camera has been changed in any way. Verification results are displayed as a list on the screen of a personal computer, and images selected are displayed as thumbnails within the same screen.

Major Features
Quick and easy verification of authenticity
Permits verification via a personal computer as to whether an image has been processed or edited after it was taken. Thumbnails of the images selected in the results display area are displayed for confirmation.

Protection of the software itself
Various code protections are employed to prevent alterations to the software program. And to further improve reliability when using this software, both a product key and a USB key are required. The USB key must be plugged into the USB port to commence application.

(formerly nik multimedia, Inc., Mr. Michael J. Slater, President and CEO; headquarters in San Diego, California).

With this collaboration, the technologies of both companies will be merged to develop and market innovative software products based on new concepts. Nikon To Focus on Digital

Nikon has made the following announcement:

As the film camera market shrinks and the popularity of compact digital cameras increases, demand for products that offer advanced features and extra value is growing rapidly. Additionally, the demand for high performance digital SLR cameras is also steadily increasing as customers shift from film SLRs or upgrade from compact digital cameras. With film cameras accounting for an ever smaller percentage of Nikon's total sales volume, the company has decided to concentrate its vast resources toward those business categories that continue to demonstrate the strongest growth. Consequently, as Nikon focuses more on the digital camera business, the company must adopt appropriate measures to ensure its continued success. With that, the Nikon film camera lineup will be reshaped, allowing more of Nikon's planning, engineering and manufacturing resources to be focused on the digital products that now drive our thriving industry. The measures that Nikon will adopt include discontinuing production of all large format Nikkor lenses and enlarging lenses, as well as several of our film camera bodies, manual focus Nikkor interchangeable lenses and related accessories. Sales of these products will cease as supplies are depleted.

Importantly, Nikon's film camera business will continue with our flagship model F6(TM) and with the FM10(TM), allowing the Nikon brand to continue serving the two strongest segments of the 35mm film camera market. Both professionals and dedicated amateurs who continue to view film as their preferred format along with students in need of an economical camera to learn the fundamentals of photography will have ideal Nikon products from which to choose. Additionally, Nikon will continue to produce the manual focus 85mm f/2.8D PC Micro-Nikkor(R).

With the interests of its customers in mind, Nikon will offer continued post-sale service for products whose production has ceased for a period of 10 (ten) years from Nikon Inc.'s last date of sale.
This shift in business strategy and in the utilization of resources will allow Nikon to further its storied history and reputation as a leader in the ever-growing digital market and continue to offer groundbreaking new products and technology for photographers of all skill levels.

Nikon Built-in Wireless LAN Support

Nikon_wifi_logo.jpgTOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce an exciting new technology that realizes new picture-taking potential. Providing versatility beyond any previous compact camera, the new COOLPIX P1 and COOLPIX P2 can boast all the advantages of built-in Wi-Fi LAN support (IEEE802.11b/g).

With the advantages of built-in Wi-Fi LAN support (IEEE802.11b/g), the new COOLPIX P1 and COOLPIX P2 realize new picture-taking potential by doing away with the need for wires and cables. In addition to USB connectivity that makes it easy to hook the cameras up to a computer or other peripherals, wireless transfer allows the photographer to send pictures from a memory card or his or her camera’s internal memory (32MB for the COOLPIX P1; 16MB for the COOLPIX P2) direct to a selected computer on command. Wireless shooting automatically transfers each picture to a selected computer as soon as it is shot. Pictures can then be viewed with Nikon’s powerful yet fun-to-use and easy PictureProject software. And wireless printing delivers the convenience of cable-free direct printing to PictBridge-compatible printers. All these functions are easy to implement, too. Just set them up with the Wizard utility to enjoy easy wireless capabilities that add outstanding flexibility to the digital photography experience.

Making much of digital camera’s connectivity to the network, Nikon released compact digital cameras with easy and quick data transfer functions and developed image transfer technologies in collaboration with FotoNation Inc. and Microsoft. Then, in 2003, Nikon introduced the Wireless Transmitter WT-1, which, attached to the digital SLR D2H, enables wireless image transfer. This was followed in 2004 with the Wireless Transmitter WT-2, which was designed for D2X and realized enhanced security and compatibility with new protocol PTP/IP. With these products, Nikon has been leading wireless image transfer technology, earning the plaudits of the press and of other industries. And now, in order to introduce the wireless transfer function to even more customers, Nikon has released compact digital cameras with built-in Wireless LAN support, offering a new level of excitement in digital photography.

Wireless image transfer functions of the COOLPIX P1 and COOLPIX P2 are as follows:
Easy Transfer: Compare the images in the memory or SD memory card with the images stored on a computer and transfer only those images not already stored on the computer.
Shooting Date: Transfer images by a specific recording date.
Marked Images: Transfer only those images with the transfer mark.
Selected Images: Transfer only selected images.
Shoot & Transfer: Transfer an image immediately after it is taken.
PC Mode: Transfer images using a computer.
Wireless Printing: Print images on a printer connected to a computer.

Nikon announce update of Nikon Capture 4 to version 4.3

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce an update of Nikon Capture 4 to version 4.3, available for immediate download. This newest version of Nikon's powerful Nikon Capture image processing software adds new tools for image adjustments and improves selected processing functions.

These improvements help to further optimize image processing for Nikon's exclusive NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) files. Also added is support for the new Nikon D50 digital SLR camera. As with previous versions, this update to version 4.3, also supports all NEF, JPEG and TIFF files produced by today’s Nikon camera models and legacy models as well.

New additions to version 4.3's performance include Color Aberration Control1 and Red Eye Correction. Color Aberration Control leverages the advantages of the NEF file format at the digital processing stage to detect and reduce the appearance of color fringing, (the chromatic difference of magnification), which typically appears in fine detail at the edge of the image; a result of the differing wavelengths of colors in peripheral areas. This new tool makes the reduction of the appearance of color fringing an automatic operation; just select the Color Aberration Control menu within Nikon Capture 4.

The new Red Eye Correction function automatically diminishes the appearance of red pupils, sometimes experienced in the eyes of subjects photographed using a flash. Red Eye Correction works not only on JPEG and TIFF files, but also on NEF files.
