Olympus Launch E-520 Digital SLR Camera
Olympus Imaging Corporation (President: Masaharu Okubo) today announced the launch of the E-520, the latest addition to the Olympus E-System series of interchangeable lens type digital SLR cameras. Featuring a built-in image stabilization mechanism functional at up to 33x* when used with ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses, the new E-520 is scheduled to be released at the end of May 2008.
Main Features
Thanks to a powerful built-in image stabilizer with a compensation effect of up to 4 EV steps**, image stabilization shooting is available at magnifications up to 33x over a wide range of focal lengths from super-wide-angle to super telephone when combined with ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses.
Enhanced "Live View" shooting with new "High-Speed Imager AF" that provides users to the same ease of use available with a compact digital camera.
"Face & Back Control" for clearer reproduction of both faces and backgrounds.
Advanced new 10-megapixel Live MOS Sensor and TruePic III image processing engine.
An advanced, updated version of the E-510 digital SLR camera (released in June 2007), the E-520 features a built-in image stabilization mechanism that actually shifts the image sensor to compensate for camera shake, as well as an impressive array of versatile functions that make it easier than ever for users to take exactly the photographs they intended. The image stabilization system incorporated in the E-520 uses SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive) actuators to shift the image sensor and compensate for camera shake by up 4 EV steps*. As the E-520 is fully compatible with any lens compliant with the Four Thirds System standard, this means that image stabilization shooting is possible at up to 33x magnification across a wide range of focusing distances from 18mm (35mm camera equivalent) super-wide-angle to 600mm (35mm camera equivalent) super telephoto. To achieve this performance, the user can simply combine the E-520 with a Four-Thirds standard lens such as the newly released ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm f4.0-5.6, the ED 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 or ED 40-500mm f4.0-5.6, and ED 70-300mm f4.0-5.6 super telephoto zoom lens.
The E-520 also incorporates the same High-Speed Imager AF initially unveiled on the E-420 (released in April 2008). This sophisticated autofocus system uses contrast detection to assure fast, accurate focusing and improve the ease and comfort of Live View shooting. In addition, the E-520 boasts Olympus's sophisticated new Face & Back Control that uses a face detection function able to detect up to 8 separate faces and optimize exposure of both faces and background. This function assures beautiful portrait or group shots, in which both the faces of the subjects and the background are clear and sharp.
All of this performance and versatility is incorporated in a compact, lightweight body. Thanks to the new 10-megapixel Live MOS Sensor and the TruePic III image processing engine, the E-520 offers the same outstanding quality as the E-3, our widely praised flagship model. With its simplicity, convenience, and excellent portability, the E-520 is a great choice even for beginners, while its powerful function set and superb quality will satisfy advanced users as well.
* When used in combination with one of Olympus's four Standard Series lenses – the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm f4.0-5.6, the ED f3.5-5.6, the ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 or the ED 70-300mm f4.0-5.6 super telephoto zoom lens, the E-520's image stabilization is effective across a wide range of focal lengths from super-wide-angle of 18mm (35mm camera equivalent) to super telephoto of 600mm (35mm camera equivalent), with magnifications up to 33x.
** Under our in-house test conditions
Development Background
In the autumn of 2006, Olympus began writing Chapter Two in the story of the Olympus E-System with the declaration, "we will continue to develop revolutionary features that extend the frontiers of DSLR photography, and to strengthen the Olympus E-System body, lens, and accessory line-up. We will continue to develop Olympus E-System bodies, lenses, and accessories for a wide range of genres, so that even more people are able to take photographs that could never be taken before."
All three models launched in 2007, the E-410, E-510 and E-3, embodied the concept set forth in "Olympus E-System Chapter Two" declaration through the incorporation of the Live View function, and, in the cases of the E-510 and E-3, through the incorporation of an integrated image stabilization mechanism.
The newly announced E-520 incorporates advanced versions of both functions. The Live View function is now easier to use and more reliable thanks to face detection and a High-Speed Imager AF, while the built-in image stabilization is now even more effective in more situations thanks to the enhancement of the lens line-up. When combined with the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 70-300mm f4.0-5.6 image-stabilized super-telephoto shooting at 600mm (35mm camera equivalent) is possible, while with the newly announced ED 9-18mm f4.0-5.6 image-stabilized super-wide-angle shooting of 18mm (35mm camera equivalent) is possible. This means makes possible handheld super-telephoto shooting of a distant subject with a compressed effect as well wide-angle shooting of city lights at night.
With these features, the E-520 and the Olympus E-System series of cameras have written the climax of Chapter Two the Olympus E-System story, fulfilling Olympus's goal of making it possible for "even more people... to take photographs that could never be taken before."

Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm f4.0-5.6 Lens Announced
Olympus Imaging Corporation (President: Masaharu Okubo) is pleased to announce the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm f4.0-5.6, a super-wide-angle zoom lens compliant with the Four Thirds System standard for digital SLR cameras and scheduled for release by the end of 2008.
Based on the Four Thirds System standard, Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses are interchangeable lenses with a digital-dedicated design that maximizes the performance of the image sensors used by digital SLR cameras. The newly announced ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm f4.0-5.6 — which will join Olympus's Standard series*1 of Olympus interchangeable lenses, is a super-wide-angle zoom lens covering a wide focusing range equivalent to 18-36 mm on a 35-mm camera lens. Representing the commercialization of the "super-wide-angle zoom lens" described in the ZUIKO DIGITAL Interchangeable Lens Roadmap currently promoted on the Olympus website.
Until now, super-wide-angle lenses tended to be big, heavy, and expensive, making it difficult for most camera users to take advantage of them. The newly announced ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm f4.0-5.6 promises to change all this. With its ultra compact and lightweight design and the outstanding portability, thanks to the DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) lens, available only with the Four Thirds System, this lens will make super-wide-angle photography friendlier and more affordable. Despite its compact size — it's just 73 mm long and weighs a mere 280 grams (current plan)*2 — this lens boasts a long focusing range equivalent to 18-36 mm on a 35-mm camera lens.
No manufacturer has yet released a zoom lens in the super-wide-angle domain that has both a focal distance equivalent to less than 20 mm on a 35-mm camera lens and a built-in image stabilization mechanism. However, when used with an Olympus digital SLR camera body with a built-in image stabilization mechanism such as the E-3 (released in November 2007), the E-510 (released in June 2007) or the newly announced E-520, the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 9-18mm f4.0-5.6 enables super-wide-angle handheld shooting at a focal distance equivalent to 18 mm on a 35-mm camera lens without using a tripod even at night. And with any one of these combinations, users will also enjoy the benefits of the Live View shooting function, which makes it possible to create compositions using unique and unusual perspectives that are difficult to obtain with conventional viewfinders.
*1 The OLYMPUS ZUIKO DIGITAL series of interchangeable lenses is comprised of three lines: 1) the Standard series, which prioritizes high cost efficiency and reduced size/weight; 2) the High Grade series with advanced functions and high performance including a splash- and dust-proof design; and 3) the Super High Grade series, which features the professional specifications and superior imaging required by top professionals.

Olympus Announce Four Thirds System Standard Interchangeable Lenses
Olympus Imaging Corp. (President Masaharu Okubo) is pleased to announce that it will release three interchangeable lenses that comply with the FourThirds System Standard: the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 SWD, the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 SWD, and the ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-35mm f2.0 SWD. Incorporating Olympus' newly developed industry-leading SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive), these lenses offer quiet, ultra-fast autofocusing. In combination with the just-announced E-3 digital SLR camera, these lenses will allow users to take advantage of the world's fastest autofocusing speed*.
To ensure the best possible quality and precision, all three lenses will be manufactured at Tatsuno Plant (Kamiina-gun, Nagano, Japan) of Olympus Opto-Technology Co., Ltd., which is equipped with the most advanced production technology.
The ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 SWD is a high-performance standard zoom lens that features for the first time the SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive) autofocusing system and covers a zoom range equivalent to 24 to 120 mm on a 35 mm camera lens. Special optical glass elements are used to correct various types of aberrations, while the digital-dedicated design ensures high-definition performance with clear, crisp images from edge to edge. This lens also boasts impressive close-up shooting capability, allowing users to shoot from as close as 25 cm throughout the zoom range.
Autofocusing is powered by Olympus's breakthrough SWD. Developed as the world's fastest AF system, this extraordinary autofocusing drive provides both high speed and high precision while operating with lower noise than ever. Optimized for use with the concurrently released E-3 camera, this lens enables the E-3 to demonstrate the full power of its high-speed capability, providing the fastest autofocusing available in the world*1 using a standard zoom lens.
The ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-35mm f2.0 SWD is the world's first standard zoom lens to feature a large f2.0 aperture *1. Boasting industry-leading imaging performance, this lens is a worthy addition to our Super High Grade (SHG) series. Together with the ED 7-14mm f4.0, ED 35-100mm f2.0 and ED 90-250mm f2.8 lenses, this lens completes our series of professional zoom lenses with fixed F-values.
The flagship of the ZUIKO DIGITAL series, this lens was developed to meet the requirements of the most demanding professionals. With features like the best possible image quality, reliable dust-/drip-proofing, Olympus's exclusive SWD-driven ultra-fast AF system, a mechanically interlocked manual focusing mechanism, and a large, flower-shaped hood with a polarization filter control window, this lens offers the reliable, trouble-free performance you need to express yourself with confidence.
With its unique f2 aperture and a zoom range equivalent to 28 to 200 mm on a 35 mm camera lens, this lens epitomizes the versatility, power and creative freedom made possible by the FourThirds System.
*1 Among interchangeable lenses for digital SLR cameras. (Survey by Olympus).
The ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 SWD is a high-performance super-telescopic zoom lens that features for the first time the SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive) autofocusing system and covers a zoom range equivalent to 100 to 400 mm of a 35 mm camera lens. ED lens elements are used extensively to correct the color blurring that can occur when telescopic lenses are extended to their maximum focal length, while the digital-dedicated design ensures high-definition performance with clear, crisp images from edge to edge. Close-up shooting capability is also superb, with a minimum shooting distance of just 1.2 meters throughout the zoom range.
Autofocusing is powered by Olympus's breakthrough SWD, enabling this lens to achieve an AF speed about two times faster* than our previous ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 model. The ideal partner for the concurrently released E-3 camera, this lens maximizes the E-3's high-speed autofocusing capability.

This technology is also applied in the Movie mode to considerably extend the opportunities for capturing the magic of movement at night. Furthermore, BrightCapture Technology makes it easier to frame shots on the large 6.4cm LCD screen with 230,000 pixels, as the image displayed is around four times brighter than on a standard LCD.
Simply elegant, elegantly simple
The µ [mju:] 760 matches its versatility and good looks with ease of use. This ergonomically-formed camera offers a choice of 23 scene modes that cover many common shooting situations including Candle, Sports and three Underwater modes. A must-have model that combines an exquisite slim design with advanced, easy-to-use technology. The µ [mju:] 760 will be available from March 2007, with an estimated High Street price of around £200.

Olympus, Panasonic and Sigma publish joint Four Thirds Standard lens catalogue
London, 14 September 2006 – Olympus Corporation, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic) and Sigma Corporation announce the publication of a joint product catalogue that features the full range of interchangeable lenses suitable for use by all Four Thirds Standard-based digital SLR cameras. Coinciding with the launch of the latest Olympus Four Thirds Standard camera, the E-400, plus two new, ultra-compact ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses, the catalogue showcases how cross-manufacturer compatibility of the standard enhances versatility for photographers.
The joint lens catalogue is the first of its type in the industry*. Based on the Four Thirds Standard, all featured lenses are expressly designed for the special demands of digital SLR photography. Because Four Thirds is an open standard which, among other things, regulates lens and body mount information, users are not bound to a single provider for their lens requirements. This means photographers have the freedom and flexibility to mix and match Four Thirds camera bodies and lenses supplied by the participating manufacturers – completely according to their needs.
A total of 24 interchangeable lenses are highlighted in the 40-page, full-colour catalogue. Each lens is presented in a clear manner, with a detailed analysis of all features together with numerous examples of photos.
Distribution of the catalogue will commence in time for photokina 2006, being held in Cologne, Germany, from 26 September to 1 October. The Olympus stand will be located in 2.2, booth B 030/040, where visitors can pick up a copy the new joint catalogue.
The official Four Thirds website (http://www.four-thirds.org/en/) has also been updated to coincide with the launch of the catalogue.

Olympus E400 Digital Camera Announced
London, 14 September 2006 – Olympus presents the latest addition to the E-System, the world’s smallest and lightest D-SLR* camera – the E-400. The compact size and low weight of this latest Four Thirds Standard camera, allows photographers to take it virtually anywhere, while not having to do without the considerable benefits of SLR photography. This model features a new CCD with 10.0 million pixels and a state-of-the-art amplifier circuit for incredible imaging performance at super fast speed. As the design of the E-400 is based on the Four Thirds Standard, users have virtually unlimited flexibility. A wide range of high-quality, interchangeable lenses, including the EISA Award winning Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL Top Pro lenses, plus other accessories are available for all types of needs. These are provided by Olympus and, thanks to cross-manufacturer compatibility of the standard, from other manufacturers as well. As with all E-System cameras, the E-400 features the Supersonic Wave Filter – ensuring dust-free photography, even after changing lenses under challenging conditions. The E-400 is expected to arrive in the UK in November, for stockist information call 0800 0720070 or visit www.olympus.co.uk.
Compact size with innovative D-SLR technology
As it is the world’s smallest and lightest D-SLR*, the E-400 is sure to never become a burden. It is the perfect travel companion, compact enough to take along on holidays or for use as a high quality back-up camera when out on the road.
Within its extraordinarily tiny frame is a treasure-trove of innovative technology. To begin with, a 10.0 million pixel CCD provides plenty of imaging power so that even the finest of details do not go to waste. This highly energy-efficient CCD features a state-of-the-art amplifier circuit that all but eradicates noise and is incredibly fast. It enables sequential shooting at up to 3fps with a five image RAW buffer in burst mode.
Like every Olympus E-System camera, the E-400 is armed with a Supersonic Wave Filter. This patented technology allows lenses to be changing – even in challenging environments – without the fear of dust contamination, giving users the brilliance of dust-free pictures every time. Developed by Olympus, the Supersonic Wave Filter generates ultra-high-speed vibrations that literally shake off dust and other particles from the CCD. These are then captured on a special adhesive membrane to prevent recontamination. For the E-400, the Supersonic Wave Filter has been optimised with smaller dimensions and a higher frequency of vibrations for even more effectiveness.
Pro features and comfortable handling.
The Olympus E-400 proves that even a feature-packed D-SLR needn’t be difficult to operate. Of course it includes the full range of manual control options for boundless creativity, and complements these with 32 scene modes that cover a wide variety of shooting situations. These include Underwater, Macro, High Key and Low Key. Users also benefit from special colour modes and the possibility to apply various Black&White filters to images.
So that photographers can continue shooting as long as they wish, the
E-400 is powered by a new high-power rechargeable battery. The camera also accepts both CompactFlash and xD-Picture Cards, giving a choice of data storage options for even more flexibility. And, to ensure that the versatility and quality of E-System photography is open to as many people as possible, the menus on the E-400, as well as its manuals and software, can be displayed any one of 25 languages, making the camera completely understandable in 39 European countries – something only Olympus currently offers.
Four Thirds compatibility for boundless versatility
As with all E-Series cameras, the E-400 conforms to the Four Thirds Standard. Olympus and various other manufacturers produce high-quality Four Thirds-compliant lenses and accessories that are specifically designed for digital SLR image capture. With only very few exceptions, the E-400 is compatible with virtually the complete range of Olympus E-System accessories. This includes the full line-up of the ZUIKO DIGITAL Top Pro lenses, which recently received an EISA award. Even an Underwater Case (PT-E03) will be available to let adventurous photographers capture the delights of the aquatic world in up to 40m of water.
New E-System lenses
For better results and improved handling, lenses based on the Four Thirds Standard feature near telecentric construction, which takes into account the specific technical characteristics and requirements of digital cameras. Two new Olympus Four Thirds lenses will be introduced with the E-400 at its launch: the EZ-1442 ED 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 (equiv. to 28-84mm on a 35mm camera), which is perfect for standard applications, and, for more magnification power there is the EZ-4015-2 ED 40-150mm 1:4.0-5.6 (equiv. to 80-300mm on a 35mm camera). Both lenses are exceptionally compact, for greater mobility and speedy use. They also offer maximum image quality at an excellent price and feature a stylish design with a blue ring in the middle – the new insignia for the Olympus E-System lens line-up.
The E-400 achieves a remarkable balancing act between being the world’s smallest and lightest D-SLR* and relinquishing nothing in terms of image quality and professional performance. It combines the size usually attributed to compact cameras with the stunningly crisp picture quality and versatility expected from an SLR.
The E-400 will be available from November 2006 for approximately £850. The package will include the E-400 body, a 14-42mm lens and a new compact 40 – 150mm lens.

Olympus and Panasonic Announce Four Thirds System Digital SLR Cameras
Olympus Corporation (Olympus) and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (Panasonic) have been engaged in joint development of cameras that comply with the Four Thirds System standard for interchangeable-lens-type digital SLR cameras, and will display the fruit of their labors at the PMA 2006 International Convention and Trade Show that starts today, February 26, in Orlando, Florida. Olympus will exhibit the E-330, a recently introduced product that incorporates jointly developed technologies, and Panasonic will announce development of the DMC-L1, its first digital SLR camera. A prototype of the DMC-L1 will also be exhibited
The two cameras are the result of an agreement announced on January 13, 2005, under which Olympus and Panasonic agreed to jointly develop underlying technologies and key components, and promote the introduction of digital SLR camera products that take full advantage of the significant user benefits offered by the Four Thirds System standard.
The two cameras are the result of an agreement announced on January 13, 2005, under which Olympus and Panasonic agreed to jointly develop underlying technologies and key components, and promote the introduction of digital SLR camera products that take full advantage of the significant user benefits offered by the Four Thirds System standard
The jointly developed mirror box unit and Live MOS sensor used in the two new cameras have significant implications for SLR performance, and have made it possible to develop products with capabilities that go far beyond digital SLR cameras of the past
The mirror box unit integrates a quick-return mirror, viewfinder, and AE sensor, and effectively functions as the heart of the SLR camera. It was specifically designed and developed so that it could be used in both Olympus and Panasonic products
The Live MOS sensor is a new-generation sensor that offers the high image quality of a CCD sensor and the low power consumption of a CMOS sensor, thereby making it possible to display Live View images on a digital SLR camera for an extended period of time. In addition, because the sensor features simplified circuitry, the distance from the microlenses to the photodiodes is short, ensuring improved response and higher image quality when light strikes the sensor at an angle.

Olympus E-330 Digital Camera

Hamburg, 26 January 2006 – The Olympus E-330 is the world’s first* digital SLR camera to feature continuous live views directly on the LCD. Enabling the framing of compositions without the need to look through the ocular, it allows digital SLR photographers to see what’s going on around them while they shoot, significantly enhancing flexibility. Thanks to a big, 6.4cm multi-angle LCD, users will only seldom need to get into awkward positions to frame difficult shots – even if shooting from the ground. Ensuring the Olympus E-330 delivers outstanding image quality is a latest-generation MOS sensor that produces incredibly detailed 7.5 megapixel results. Meanwhile, this model naturally incorporates the Olympus-exclusive Supersonic Wave Filter for dust-free photography, as all cameras in the Olympus E-Series do. And to offer the optimal equipment in any shooting situation, the camera is compatible with the entire range of Olympus E-System accessories.
The Olympus E-330 represents a breakthrough in digital SLR photography. For the first time* it gives users the freedom to see their subjects live on the camera’s tilting, multi-angle LCD. This means that macro photographers needn’t lie in the mud to frame ground-level subjects any more, and portrait photographers can keep constant eye contact with their model or client. Moreover, underwater photographers will finally have the freedom to see what they shoot through their diving mask.
This innovation is made all the better due to superior image quality by using a highly advanced Live MOS sensor with 7.5 million pixels.
As with all Olympus E-System products, the Olympus E-330 incorporates the Supersonic Wave Filter to protect the image sensor from harmful contaminants that can enter the camera during lens changes. Generating ultra-high-speed vibrations, dust and other particles that can affect image quality are shaken off and then captured on a special adhesive membrane. The function is invoked at each start-up of the camera or can be manually executed at any time.
Catering to virtually all users’ needs and preferences, this model offers a full manual exposure mode, semi-manual aperture or shutter priority options plus the convenience of automatic shooting. In addition, 20 scene modes and 7 creative modes will have the ideal solution in store for nearly every photographic situation. New features include an anti blur option, nature macro and xD-Panorama mode plus two underwater modes. A special Live View Boost function also increases the brightness of the view on the 2.5”/6.4cm HyperCrystal LCD for easy framing, even in dim lighting.
Numerous professional options ensure first-class image capture. A 49 area AE sensor with sophisticated AE algorithm, for example, provides accurate exposure values for ESP metering. Black & white shooting is available with the possibility to add colour filters – as used in analogue photography. A one-touch white balance option, AF-lock functionality and depth of field preview continue the pro-level features of the Olympus E-330. To evaluate exposure levels of individual compositions, the camera offers a Histogram function. And with both CompactFlash and xD-Picture Card slots, this model gives photographers extra flexibility for extended shooting and lets them choose the type of storage medium they prefer. Users also have the choice between saving their data in JPEG, TIFF and RAW format.
Despite all these functions, the camera is easy to handle. Thanks to the TTL optical porro design, the lightweight, ergonomic body is incredibly compact. To further enhance shooting ease, users can choose the amount of on-screen information they want to see: from advanced information for experienced photographers to just the general details for beginners.
The full advantages of SLR photography are available to Olympus E-330 owners due to compatibility with virtually the entire E-System range of accessories. In addition to the extensive line-up of lenses, specialised accessories such as various flash units are available too. And to allow the amazing potential of this model to be used even off-shore, Olympus offers the underwater case PT-E02 (waterproof up to 60m) from May 2006.
The Olympus E-330 sets a new standard in digital SLR photography with the ability to deliver continuous live views directly on the LCD. Convincing with extraordinary image quality thanks to its 7.5 million pixel MOS sensor, this model hits the shelves from March 2006.

Olympus E500 Digital SLR Announced

The Olympus E-500 digital SLR's main features include:
• A compact, lightweight and easy to handle body in a classic penta-prism design
• A professionally approved, user-friendly controls layout
• An 8 megapixel Full Frame Transfer CCD
• Olympus’ unique Supersonic Wave Filter to eliminate problems with dust when changing lenses
• A shot preview function to provide easy viewing of images before they are saved onto the memory card
• A high resolution 2½″HyperCrystal LCD with 215,250 pixels
• Improved metering from a 49 area sensor
• A special filter to minimise image noise at high ISO levels
• Two memory card slots for Compact Flash and xD media cards
• Full manual control or a choice of 21 pre-defined scene modes
The Olympus E-500 has been designed with the user in mind. This means menus that make sense and buttons on the body that are easy to understand and operate, adding automatic settings for every imaginable situation and making the LCD big and bright enough so users can easily review all their shots.
A traditional penta-prism shape gives the camera an authentic and professional look and feel, the user-friendly controls and functions are easy to operate and the handgrip has been positioned so that the camera can easily be kept stable when shooting. The E-500 is ideal for numerous photographic situations, from capturing landscape vistas whilst mountaineering to documenting a city’s hustle and bustle.
The E-500 includes 21 pre-defined scene modes, ranging from landscape to sunset to portrait, meaning it can be picked up and used straight away. However, as a photographer’s skills develop, the manual controls come into their own, enabling experimentation only limited by the photographer’s imagination. P/A/S/M modes come as standard.
To radically improve the metering capability a new 49 area AE sensor providing accurate exposure values for ESP metering is included. This uses a newly-developed evaluation algorithm. Conventional centre-weighted average and spot metering, highlight and shadow basis spot metering and AE Lock functioning are also available too, making the E-500 the ideal choice for any ambitious amateur or creative semi-pro wishing to develop their individual technique and style over time.
The E-500 provides outstanding image quality. An eight megapixel, Full Frame Transfer CCD offers a larger pixel area than an ordinary Interline Transfer CCD and as a result delivers images with a greater exposure latitude, more detail and less noise.
Olympus has developed a way for photographers to enjoy the freedom of using all the lenses of the Olympus E-System in the most challenging, dusty environments without compromising image quality. Every time the camera is turned on Olympus’ Supersonic Wave Filter, a patented ultrasonic technology that shakes at 35,000 vibrations a second to remove dust from in front of the camera sensor, is activated. The spot-free photos that are produced liberate users from hours spent retouching photographs at the computer.
The camera is also equipped with a noise filter that can be turned on and off, as the photographer desires to minimise image noise at high ISO values.
Results can be viewed on the E-500’s 2.5 inch, 215,250 pixel HyperCrystal LCD screen that offers many times the contrast of conventional LCD monitors. Olympus Imaging Corporation (President: Masaharu Okubo) is pleased to announce the introduction of the “ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8mm F3.5 Fisheye”, the first fixed-focal fisheye lens in the ZUIKO DIGITAL series. The new lens will go on sale in January 2006.
ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses, designed specifically for use with digital SLR cameras, comply with the Four Thirds System, and are able to exploit the full power of the CCD in the E-1 launched in 2003 and E-300 introduced in December 2004.
The “ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 8mm (*16mm) F3.5 Fisheye” has a 180º field of view diagonal to the image sensor. This high-performance lens is perfect for photographers wishing to enjoy the special creative possibilities, including powerful deformation effects that can be achieved with a fisheye lens.
Another feature of this lens is its super-close-up focusing capability, allowing photography as close as 2cm from the lens front to the subject. This ability to approach the subject aggressively is essential to the creation of images with exaggerated perspective effects.
For professional-standard underwater fisheye photography, this product can be used in conjunction with the optional PT-EO1 underwater case (to go on sale in June 2005), which is specifically designed for the E-300, and the optional PPO-EO4 underwater lens port (to go on sale in July 2005) for this lens. This underwater system can withstand pressures at depths of up to 60m. The unique expressive qualities of fisheye lens photography can now be achieved in underwater settings as well as on land.
