SanDisk Introduces 8-Gigabite SanDisk Extreme III SDHC Card

Sandisk-ExtremeIII8gb-sdhc-card.jpgNEW YORK, N.Y., OCTOBER 17, 2007 – More capacity and fast transfer speeds are the chief benefits of the SanDisk Extreme® III 8-gigabyte (GB)1 SDHC™ (SD High-Capacity) flash memory card, which was introduced today by SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK). This and other imaging products from SanDisk will be displayed in Booth 1808 at PhotoPlus 2007 International Conference & Expo, which opens Thursday at Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

The 8GB SDHC card will be packaged with a SanDisk MicroMate™ USB 2.0 Reader – a $20 value – so that users have a one-stop solution for capturing, storing and transferring their images. The bundled card and reader are expected to ship within the next 30 days to U.S. retailers at a suggested price of $179.99. It will also be available in Europe.

An 8GB SanDisk Extreme III SDHC card can store more than 4,000 high-resolution pictures or up to 16 hours of MPEG 4 video2. The card has a read/write speed of 20 megabytes per second, thus providing rapid downloads to a personal computer.

“With the introduction of more cameras that can use SDHC, including the Nikon D80 and the Canon EOS-1D Mark II, the SanDisk Extreme III card is an ideal choice for those who want maximum dependability, durability and fast download speeds,” said Tanya Chuang, SanDisk’s director of retail product marketing for global imaging. “Also, since many of these cameras have extended video capabilities, the 8GB capacity provides users with storage for longer movie clips.”

The SDHC format is designed to allow for capacities greater than 2GB, but devices must be SDHC compatible in order to work with SDHC memory cards. For video applications, SanDisk Extreme III SDHC cards have a speed rating of Class 6, the highest available SDA speed class, meaning that they have a minimum continuous data transfer rate of 6MB/second3.

All SanDisk Extreme III cards offer ESP Technology to streamline data transfer, RescuePRO® software to recover accidentally deleted files and images, a dedicated technical support telephone hotline and a limited lifetime warranty. The cards are designed for shooting in extreme temperatures (-13 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit or -25 to 85 degrees Celsius), high altitudes and other demanding situations.

Hasselblad Launch H3D-II, Fourth Generation High-End DSLR

Hasselblad’s H3D line of products today achieve a new level of digital maturity and integration with the launch of the H3D-II, the fourth iteration of the camera system and one that can now justifiably lay claim to be the world’s finest digital SLR camera. Offering unsurpassed image quality delivered through an outstanding combination of hardware, software and lenses, the H3D-II is the clear leader in the high-end DSLR category, now a recognized segment of the photographic market.

A complete DSLR that is much more than the sum of its parts, the H3D-II is peerless in terms of its combined image quality and flexibility. While retaining its full digital lens line and the choice of 22, 31 or 39 megapixel capture units using CCD image sensors up to 48x36 mm – the largest currently available and more than twice the size of even the largest 35mm camera sensors – the H3D-II now has a large, bright 3” display, which affords both improved viewing of captured images and lower power consumption.

Reflecting the higher level of integration in the system, all the key functions of the camera are adjusted via digital menus, which can now be controlled via an intuitive thumbwheel control on the handle of the H3D-II, making the operation of the camera easier and more efficient. A new separate button for direct control of ISO settings and white balance has also been added to the camera controls.

To optimize the digital image quality of a DSLR, Hasselblad has identified the following key system components: an excellent optical system, comprising the best lenses twinned with the largest possible sensor format; full integration to enable lens correction and Hasselblad’s own Ultra-Focus; and the best possible RAW converter. With all these components in place, the result is Hasselblad’s STAR Quality images, photographic flexibility and a truly professional appearance.

In the H3D-II, Hasselblad has addressed each of the system components above to provide an unprecedented level of image quality that outperforms any professional digital camera system on the market today, delivering outstanding pixel resolution, better colors, and improved detail rendering. When used with Hasselblad HC and HCD lenses, the camera system offers full digital lens correction through its DAC-Digital Auto Correction, which, in addition to chromatic aberration and distortion, can now correct for vignetting phenomena.

Image noise in the H3D-II has been significantly reduced by improving the cooling of the sensor, achieved by attaching to the CCD a physical heatsink, which dissipates the heat generated to the entire camera body and considerably lowers the temperature of the system. As a component of Hasselblad’s revolutionary forthcoming image processing software, Phocus, the Hasselblad RAW Converter (HRC) also has an amazing anti-moiré capability which will eliminate moiré from any 3FR files, including even reprocessed images shot in 3FR on previous generations of Hasselblad cameras.

Demonstrating Hasselblad’s drive for continuous technical innovation, the H3D-II also features Hasselblad’s Global Image Locator (GIL), a unique integrated GPS product that automatically records the camera's exact geographic co-ordinates at the precise moment of image capture. This data is integrated into the metadata of a specific image file and used together with the Hasselblad's new imaging software, Phocus, to allow images to be located on a map or found in a computer file system using the GPS coordinates as a search term. All the image files shot or stored in a specific location can be easily identified and found. As a direct link to Google Earth has also been built into Hasselblad’s Phocus software, it is also possible to establish via the internet what image files were captured at any particular location. With Google’s functionality, the user can also view their GPS tagged images, “fly” between them and even into them.

Christian Poulsen, CEO of Hasselblad, comments: “With the introduction of the Hasselblad H3D-II, we believe that the world’s best high-end DSLR camera has just got better. By further raising the level of integration by improving the controls, functionality and sensor cooling, and adding a new and more intuitive user interface, and a bright, 3” display, we continue to address the needs of professional photographers and to reassure them that, by investing in Hasselblad, they’ve made the right choice. The H3D-II continues the evolution of the world’s most advanced DSLR camera system and, will set a new standard for digital photographic quality.”

The new H3D-II is available immediately worldwide through Hasselblad’s national subsidiaries and channel partners with a retail price of $33,995 for the H3D-39II, $26,995 for the H3D-31II, and $24,995 for the H3D-22II.

SanDisk Boosts Capacities in High-Performance SanDisk Ultra II Line

SanDisk_Ultra_II.jpgBERLIN, GERMANY, August 31, 2007 – SanDisk® Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today introduced two new capacities in its high-performance SanDisk Ultra® II line: a 4-gigabyte (GB)1 SDHC™ Plus card and an 8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo™ card. The announcement was made at IFA, the world’s largest consumer electronics show, where SanDisk is exhibiting at Booth 130, in Hall 15.1 of Messe Berlin, through Sept. 5.

Both cards offer fast read and write speeds of 10 megabytes per second2 (10MB/sec), reducing the waiting time between camera shots and the download time when transferring photos and video to a computer.

“With video recording becoming a standard feature on digital still cameras, memory cards need more capacity and speed to capture not only high-quality photos, but also video” said Susan Park, senior product marketing manger for SanDisk Ultra II cards. “Our SanDisk Ultra II line of high-capacity memory cards provides increased storage and speed to meet the growing demands of digital photography, so consumers can capture, preserve, and relive their most precious moments.”

“High-resolution digital still cameras and high-definition video camcorders using flash memory are changing the way people capture their memories,” said Ron Glaz, program director for digital capture devices and photofinishing research at IDC. “But the extra clarity and detail of these images require significant increases in the speed and storage of flash memory, creating demand for capacities such as 4GB and 8GB that would have seemed outlandish a few years ago.”

Beyond speed and capacity, the 4GB SanDisk Ultra II SDHC Plus card offers both SD™ and USB functionality in one card. Designed with SanDisk’s unique, patented Hinge Lock technology, the card may be inserted into a USB port on any computer. This two-in-one SD-plus-USB feature eliminates the need to carry cables or card readers to transfer photos and videos from cameras or camcorders. Despite its small size, the hinge is sturdy – having survived more than 10,000 open-close cycles in SanDisk’s durability testing.

The 8GB SanDisk Ultra II Memory Stick PRO Duo is designed for recording high-definition videos and high-resolution still images on Sony digital cameras and camcorders.

Pricing and availability
The 4GB SanDisk Ultra II SDHC Plus card has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price in the United States of $79.99. The 8GB SanDisk Ultra II Memory Stick PRO Duo card has a U.S. MSRP of $159.99. Worldwide availability of both cards is targeted for October.

Epson Develops Imaging WorkShop Software to Enhance Photographers' Workflow

TOKYO, Japan, May 21, 2007

Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson") has developed Imaging WorkShop, a workflow application software package for use with high-end printers (pigment ink printers handling A3 and A2), aimed at meeting the demands of advanced amateur and professional photographers. Imaging WorkShop is scheduled to be available for sale through NewSoft Technology Corporation ("NewSoft") from the end of this month.

Imaging WorkShop is a software package designed to greatly enhance the efficiency of the printing workflow of advanced amateur and professional photographers, who handle a tremendous volume of photographs as a result of the growing use of digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras. This software provides a seamless workflow that enables the user to browse, layout, and print photos, making it possible to easily, reliably, and efficiently process a large volume of images. Moreover, Imaging WorkShop is also capable of editing or making adjustments to images, whenever the necessity arises.

Epson Develops Next-Generation Inkjet Print Head

TOKYO, Japan, March 27, 2007: Seiko Epson Corporation ("Epson") has succeeded in developing a thin-film piezo element that boasts the world's highest* degree of distortion. Volume production of next-generation Micro Piezo print heads that feature these elements as actuators will be launched in April 2007.

The Micro Piezo print head is an inkjet print head which utilizes Epson's original Micro Piezo technology. This technology uses electrical signals to change the shape of piezo elements and then fires ink droplets according to the physical force generated by the change in shape of these elements. Epson's Stylus Photo and Stylus Pro inkjet printers, which utilize Micro Piezo print head technology, are photo-quality printers that have consistently played leading roles in the Japanese inkjet printer market and earned high approval and trust from customers.

Inkjet systems are currently attracting a great deal of attention as they are being put to use more and more frequently in printing and manufacturing processes. Inkjet systems have the advantages of being ideally suited to small print loads and of being gentler on the environment. Compared to other inkjet systems, Micro Piezo technology offers superior ink ejection performance, compatibility with a wide variety of inks, and durability. As a result, this technology is already being utilized effectively in various commercial and industrial fields such as photo lab printing, digital printing, textile printing, and color filter manufacturing. The Micro Piezo print head is not only suitable for functions ranging from consumer applications to commercial and industrial applications, but it also offers outstanding cost effectiveness due to its high degree of reliability and production volume efficiency.

Epson is currently focusing its development efforts on creating a next-generation Micro Piezo print head to support expansion of the inkjet field beyond consumer printers and to strengthen its applications for business and industry. Through these efforts, Epson has achieved the following:

Created a piezo element with the world's highest degree of distortion through film thickness reduction and materials development.

Raised density levels by developing and utilizing innovative thin-film processing techniques.

Designed a high-density ink reservoir through independent MEMS technology development.

As a result, Epson has managed to develop a nozzle with a density of 360 dpi—the world's highest* for an inkjet print head using piezoelectric technology—while at the same time maintaining the advantages of conventional Micro Piezo print heads. Epson has also managed to establish a completely independent manufacturing process by producing the piezoelectric materials in-house. The installation of these next-generation Micro Piezo print heads in printers and other devices will make it possible to design speedier and more compact inkjet equipment than ever before.

In the future, Epson plans to focus on Micro Piezo technology as one of its core technologies. By continuing to develop Micro Piezo technology, Epson will be able to expand its usage potential beyond consumer applications to encompass other areas such as business and industry.

*According to Epson's research

Issue with Canon 1D and 1Ds RAW files on Windows Vista

Microsoft have identified an issue with Canon RAW files that end in .TIF (which are limited to 1D and 1Ds cameras) on Windows Vista systems that do not have the Canon RAW codec. If a user adds metadata to one of these files, using the Windows Photo Gallery or the Windows Explorer, the file will be corrupted. This is a result of the Windows Imaging Component API not understanding the difference between a legitimate TIFF file, and a Canon RAW file with a .TIF suffix.

Microsoft and Canon have identified the issue and are testing a patch to address the problem. Microsoft will provide download information once the patch is released.

Hasselblad Launch 48mm Full-Frame DSLR Camera System

Hasselblad-H3D.jpgAnnouncement Date 28 September 2006

Hasselblad is today firmly positioning itself as the pre-eminent provider of high-end digital cameras with the launch of the Hasselblad H3D, the world’s first 48mm full-frame DSLR camera system. The H3D is the result of Hasselblad’s strategy of taking photographic flexibility and image quality to new levels, as yet unseen in any competing product. When compared with high-end 35mm DSLRs, the H3D delivers unmatched pixel resolution, better colors and detail rendering and a new choice of viewfinders for creative image composition. In comparison with digital backs, the H3D delivers image quality with a higher level of detail and true sharpness thanks to Hasselblad’s Digital APO Correction (DAC) and the advances of its new Ultra-Focus functionality. The H3D’s full-frame concept offers unique control of image composition and with its new 28mm lens, the H3D allows photographers for the first time ever to take wide angle shots on a 36 x 48mm sensor.

Christian Poulsen, CEO of Hasselblad comments: “The digital revolution prompted many professional photographers to adopt high-end 35mm DSLRs as their back-up or even their main camera. But as the most demanding photographers have become acquainted with the technology, the feedback we’ve had indicates that high-end 35mm often doesn’t offer the required image quality. Many photographers also miss the high-end camera system’s additional photographic flexibility that is beyond the physical parameters of the high-end 35mm DSLR, which was originally designed for ultra-fast shooting environments. Hasselblad has been deluged by requests from traditional camera back buyers for true wide angle photography and extended image quality. We’re confident that in the H3D, a logical evolution of the H1D and H2D, professional photographers will find the complete photographic solution for these needs. What Victor Hasselblad managed to develop with the classic V camera system, the H3D now extends into the digital age.”

Size matters
The H3D is currently available in two models, the Hasselblad H3D-22 and the Hasselblad H3D-39, offering image capture with a resolution of either 22 or an unsurpassed 39 megapixels on the largest image sensor currently available in digital photography – more than twice the size of a high-end 35mm camera sensor. The system’s viewfinders and extra large and bright lenses enable extremely precise compositions and easy operation in dim lighting.

Ultra-Focus and Digital APO Correction boost lens performance
The H3D is built around a brand new digital camera engine, providing a new standard of image sharpness, ‘Ultra-Focus’. In the H3D camera, information about lens and exact capture conditions are fed into the digital camera engine for ultra-fine-tuning of the auto-focus mechanism, taking into account the design of the lens and the optical specification of the sensor. By then adding Digital APO Correction (DAC) – digital, APO-chromatic correction of the color aberration and distortion in the images - Hasselblad raises the performance of the full HC lens range to a new level of sharpness and resolution and, with perfect pixel definition, optimizes the basis for image rendering.

World’s first 28mm wide angle lens for 48mm DSLR camera systems
Hasselblad has designed a new 28mm wide angle lens especially for the H3D. To achieve the necessary optical performance, the Hasselblad lens designers have taken full advantage of the Ultra-Focus and DAC functionality to ensure that outstanding images are produced by this extraordinary lens. Photographers who work with the H3D and the HCD 28mm lens will be amazed by the full-frame composition and unmatched wide angle image quality.

New waist-level viewfinder
Taking the V System’s lead, Hasselblad is launching an interchangeable, waist-level viewfinder for the H system cameras. The new waist-level viewfinder is a superb composition tool that allows the photographer to maintain direct eye contact with the model throughout the shoot, particularly important for fashion and people shoots. The H3D thus offers a choice of viewfinders – eye- or waist-level – an important flexibility for the professional photographer.

Hasselblad Star Quality
To define the core parameters of optimal image quality, Hasselblad is introducing its Hasselblad Star Quality standard. Traditionally, resolution or the number of pixels on the sensor has been perceived as the most important quality factor in digital photography, but in fact other parameters have similar or even greater impact – sharpness, the definition of small details, color and low noise. Hasselblad has spent the last two years developing the underlying technology to optimize these parameters:

Resolution: – State of the art 39 megapixels
Sharpness: – Ultra-Focus and DAC
Small details: – Single shot interpolation
Color: – Hasselblad Natural Color Solution
Low noise: – Digital noise reduction
With the introduction of the H3D, Hasselblad has produced a camera system that can deliver the highest image quality to date.

Photographic Flexibility
To allow the photographer to shoot the most creative and best composed images, the H3D has also been developed for maximum flexibility:

Viewfinder flexibility: - The system offers a choice of viewfinders for image composition and is compatible with Hasselblad’s standard H System lenses and the new 28mm digital HCD lens.
Tilt and Shift flexibility: - The digital capture unit can be used on a view camera with tilt and shift functionality.
Storage flexibility: - The H3D also gives the professional photographer three options for image storage: on a CF card, to a Hasselblad Image Bank (a 100GB drive with a write speed of up to 60MB/sec) via FireWire, or the tethered operation with extended, special capture controls.
Film flexibility: - In exceptional circumstances, such as extreme heat or cold or extremely long or short exposure times, it is also possible to switch to film.
With these operating and storage options, the photographer is able to select a mode to suit their work, whatever the nature and whether in the studio or on location.

Christian Poulsen concludes: “It has been a major achievement for Hasselblad to have implemented its new, fully digital strategy. We are confident that the H3D, the first product resulting from the new strategy, will set new standards for digital photography, even when compared with the best 35mm DSLR cameras and digital backs. In pursuance of our objectives, we will continue to focus on bringing to market digital products that offer flexibility and the best possible image quality, and on working with existing and new Hasselblad users to help them take full advantage of the potential that digital technology holds for them, both creatively and commercially.”

The new H3D is available immediately worldwide through Hasselblad’s national subsidiaries and channel partners at retail prices to be announced at Photokina.

An H3D upgrade program is available for current H1D and H2D users.

sandisk-4gbsd.jpgMILPITAS, CA, July 17, 2006 – SanDisk ® Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) today introduced a 4-gigabyte (GB)1 SD High Capacity (SDHC ™ ) card. The new cards, which support capacities of 4GB and higher, are rated Class 2 for speed and performance and can store more than 2,000 high-resolution pictures, more than 1,000 digital songs or up to 8 hours of MPEG 4 video 2.

The 4GB SDHC card will be bundled with the MicroMate ™ USB 2.0 reader at no extra charge. These new readers work with both SDHC and SD cards. SDHC cards require an SDHC-compatible reader.

SDHC is the new designation for SD cards larger than 2GB that adhere to the SD 2.00 specification, a completely new design that is required for cards and hosts to support 4GB to 32GB capacities. The specification was developed by the SD Association, an industry standards board, which also defined three speed classes for speed and performance capabilities. These cards adhere to the SD Speed Class Rating specification which defines a minimum sustained transfer speed for SDHC cards 3.

Susan Park, retail product marketing manager at SanDisk said, “Demand for high capacity cards continues to increase as storage-intensive applications such as digital cameras and digital video camcorders capable of taking high-resolution pictures and recording high-quality video clips come into the mainstream.”

Though standard SD and SDHC cards look identical in size and shape, only SDHC-compatible products will be able to accept the new SDHC cards. SanDisk differentiates its new cards with the new SDHC logo on the card and retail package.

Chris Chute, research manager at IDC, said, “Consumers are beginning to demand next-generation image and video capture features in smaller devices. SDHC, while only supported by a few manufacturers and camera models now, is sure to be adopted by the imaging market as HD video recording and higher-resolution photography necessitates larger capacities.”

Wes Brewer , vice president of consumer product marketing at SanDisk, said, “In order to provide the easiest and most compatible solution for 4GB and larger capacity SDHC cards in the market, SanDisk chose to bundle its new MicroMate USB 2.0 SD/SDHC compatible card reader, which normally retails for $19.99, with this new card. We are confident that our customers will have the best user experience and highest value—dollar for dollar—anyone can offer at this time.”

Sinarback eMotion75 – mobile back with 33 million pixels

In April of this year, Sinar will introduce the fabulous new Sinarback eMotion75. Externally, only the type designation “75” hints at the power that is contained within. As you might expect, however, its internal features once again vigorously raise the standards
for mobile high-end digital backs. The Sinarback eMotion75 thus provides continuous image sequences of up to 160 exposures. This is made possible by a unique memory of 6 Gigabytes that is incorporated into this back, which is ready to store fresh image data approximately every 1.5 seconds. As soon as the shutter release button is no longer activated, the images are transferred to an intercha ngeable CF card at a rate of more than 16 MB/s.

The sensitivity of the 6668 x 4992-pixel CCD can be set for a value between 50 and 400 ISO. That ensures that difficult lighting situations can also be mastered without problems. File
sizes of up to 190 MB provide sufficient latitude for even the most demanding output formats, so that subsequent, unexpected assignments can be handled without complex reshootings. The desire and the objective of the photographer is to be able to handle as many different exposure situations and assignments as possible with a single digital back – regardless of whether it is to be used with a medium-format or a view camera. Only then does it become possible also to master the commercial aspect of an assignment with economic efficiency. With the Sinarback eMotion75, Sinar once again increases the flexibility and the performance capabilities of its systems for the professional.

The active and usable surface of the sensor is still 48 x 36 mm as it is in the Sinarback eMotion22 (more than twice the size of the sensors used in 35 mm cameras). The pixel size is 7.2 microns, which is smaller than the pixel size in the eMotion22. The smaller pixel size leads to much better Moiré characteristics, while at the same time raising the performance capabilities of this back in advanced wide-angle and view camera applications. This is the compelling consideration that led Sinar to select this 33 million-pixel sensor for the new Sinarback eMotion75.

Pixel sizes that are even smaller would provide greater resolution, but this would be at the expense of image dynamics and speed. These criteria play an inc reasingly important role in virtually all other fields of object photography. In addition, only Sinar guarantees that the performance capabilities of the new generation of sensors can be applied to the optical-physical camera system for optimized digital image data without compromises.

All the adapters designed for the Sinarback eMotion22 can also be used with the new Sinarback eMotion75. Thus a large selection of medium-format adaptations is available right from the very start. With the Hasselblad-V Adapter, Sinarback eMotion digital backs can also be used at any time on any view camera.

TIPA 2006 Awards

tipa-logo.gifSince 1991, Technical Image Press Asociation (TIPA) members meet once a year at the General Assembly to discuss projects, share opinions, comment on industry innovations and trends, often visiting historical photographic sites, museums or factories. In these three-day meetings TIPA editors also vote by secret ballot for the best photo & imaging products in Europe. The TIPA awards for 2006 have now been announced.

Best D-SLR Entry Level: Nikon D50
Little sister of the popular Nikon D70, the 6.1 megapixel D50 gives amateurs the chance to shoot high-resolution images at a very low cost. The ergonomics are well thought out and no major feature or function is missing. In the field, the Nikon D50 gives a performance beyond that expected at this price point. The automatic exposure system compensates for highlights and shadows in difficult lighting conditions, the 5-point autofocus system locks on quickly to the subject, and continuous shooting is possible at up to 2.5 frames per second. When necessary, the seven Digital Vari-Program Modes help optimise the settings for the best results. The D50 is compatible with all the AF Nikkor lenses and accessories, which makes this model a serious starting point for digital SLR photography.

Best D-SLR Expert: Nikon D200
Though it’s less than 2000 euros, the Nikon D200 offers a resolution of 10 million pixels (3872 x 2592) with files of 32.78 x 21.95cm at 300 dpi. You can shoot with a sensitivity of up to ISO 400 and even 800 without too much concern about noise or colour shifts, while the camera’s 3D Color Matrix Metering II measures exposure superbly without blowing highlight detail. However, it’s the D200’s handling speed which really impresses: it’s up-and-running in just 0.15 seconds, and has a shutter lag of a mere 50 milliseconds. It offers 5 frames-persecond for at least 37 consecutive shots in Fine JPEG, and this stunning performance is supported by a new 11-area AF system that the photographer can select at will.

Best D-SLR Professional: Canon EOS 5D
The EOS 5D is the first digital camera that offers a full-frame, 24x36mm sensor at a realistic price, and there’s no compromise on image quality. With 12.8 million pixels available, there’s plenty of resolution for huge prints, and they’re big pixels, too, which means lower noise and higher quality in the final image. Picture sharpness is excellent, and the high resolution and superb image processing means artefacts are rendered invisible. Moreover, the size of the sensor means that the actual focal lengths of Canon EF lenses are used, and with no ‘crop factor’ to swing the results, this gives the angleof- view and the large viewfinder image that 35mm film photographers know and love.

Best Medium Format Digital System: Hasselblad H2D-39
Among the professional community, Hasselblad’s H body and lenses already have a reputation in line with the sumptuous quality of the classic film Hasselblads. The new H2D-39 however, is equipped with a digital back that boasts a massive 39 megapixels, and that sets an entirely new standard in the digital world. The increase in resolution was achieved by reducing of the size of the individual pixels from 9 to 6.8 microns, and the resulting loss of speed is compensated for by improved digital signal processing within the body. Make sure you’ve got plenty of storage space though, as the rise in pixel count means the file-size of a 16-bit TIFF from the H2D- 39 is now up to an incredible 224 MB!

Best Hi-end Professional Camera System: Sinar m System
The Sinar m System is a modular concept camera adopting digital backs. As a medium format camera it uses the newly developed high-end Sinaron Digital AF lenses built by Zeiss, a prism viewfinder and the Sinaron Digital AF Mirror Module. The Sinar m has several exposure metering modes and automatic exposure features, as well as TTL flash control. Shutter speed range is from 1/2000sec to 68 minutes. It can be used as a modern shutter system for the Sinar p3 view camera. Equipped with the Nikon mirror Module, it accepts a large number of Nikkor lenses.

Best Ultra Compact Digital Camera: Canon Digital Ixus 65
Featuring a high resolution 3 inch LCD screen, the steel-bodied Digital IXUS 65 draws on the original IXUS design concept to achieve a classically elegant styling. This innovative camera sports a unique Touch Control Dial, which can also be used to scroll through images during playback, while the useful Image Inspection Tool displays a newly-shot image and a magnified section at the same time. This allows you to check for sharpness quickly and easily. The Digital IXUS 65 incorporates ISO 800 to facilitate flash-free shooting indoors and minimise the effects of camera shake.

Best Compact Digital Camera: Fujifilm FinePix F30
The Fujifilm FinePix F30 Zoom is the world’s first digital compact camera to deliver ISO 3200 sensitivity at full resolution. This means that it can give sharp images, even at night-time, or with fast-moving subjects. Users are able to produce sharp images with minimal noise, no subject blurring and atmospheric lighting in dark conditions. In addition, the FinePix F30 Zoom has 15 new scene modes from underwater, beach and snow, to sunset, party and fireworks. These make it easier than ever for users to experiment with photography in a range of different lighting conditions.

Best Superzoom Digital Camera: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 is the world’s smallest digital still camera with a 10x optical zoom, and this is made possible by the world’s first integrated retractable lens system with folded optics technology. The TZ1 allows unlimited consecutive shooting up to the capacity of the 13.4 MB built-in memory or the SD memory card. Panasonic has also equipped the TZ1 with its globally recognised Optical Image Stabiliser feature. O.I.S minimises the jitter from shaky hands that causes many photos to look blurred. Offering high quality image output, the TZ1’s new Venus Engine III also dramatically reduces noise levels even at increased ISO settings.

Best Multimedia Digital Camera: Samsung Digimax i6 PMP
The Samsung Digimax i6 is more than a digital camera; it’s a multimedia product. The Digimax i6 is only 18.5mm thick, and has an enhanced grip, using a unique curved design ensuring a steady shot when taking pictures. It has multimedia capabilities such as MP3 playback and the addition of a personal media player function. The user can even take pictures whilst listening to music. The i6 also has ASR (Advanced Shake Reduction). This unique algorithm reduces the effects of camera shake and helps the user take clear and natural pictures indoors or in dark conditions without using flash.

Best Consumer Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC
With a versatile range of wide-angle focal lengths, a good optical performance and a budget price, the Sigma 10-20mm is an excellent investment for owners of DSLRs with APS-C format sensors. On a Nikon or a Canon D-SLR, it corresponds to around 15-30mm in 35mm film terms – a perfect wide-angle complement to the typical standard zoom which starts at an equivalent of 28mm. Its sharpness remains constant throughout the zoom range, and its compact size of 83x81mm and light weight of 470g makes it an ideal companion for shooting travel, landscapes or architectural photography.

Best Professional Lens: AF-S VR Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED
This lens is the first-ever macro model with an integrated optical stabilizer. This 105mm f/2.8 reaches a life-size reproduction ratio of 1:1 with an ambitious optical construction of 14 elements in 12 groups. It sports an ED lens and features new Nano Crystal coating technology, which is designed to further minimize flare. With internal focusing and a gyroscope for the optical stabilization, this Micro Nikkor lens shows nearly a 4-stop gain in speed if compared to the same lens without the Vibration Reduction feature. The lens is large and robust, but its filter thread is a mere 62mm. With an attractive price, it comes complete with a soft case and lens hood, and will be the lens of choice for discerning macro photographers.

Best Prestige Camera: Ricoh GR Digital
Ricoh has a reputation of producing cameras that stand out from the crowd, and the Ricoh GR Digital is no exception. The Ricoh GR Digital has a very high quality 28mm (35mm film equivalent) lens, which can be used with an optional converter to cover an angle as wide as 21mm. The new GR Digital inherits the superb image quality that made the awardwinning GR Series of 35mm film cameras so popular, and the style and performance is distilled into a compact body just 25mm thick. With a high-quality feel and superb expandability, this is the perfect lightweight tool for professional photographers and advanced amateurs.

Best Digital Camera Back: Leaf Aptus 75
The Leaf Aptus 75 represents the most recent digital camera back for high-end, professional photography. The result is a seamless, customized digital imaging workflow.

"We are thrilled to partner with Lexar to streamline the digital imaging workflow and to dramatically reduce production time for our customers," said Blaine Mathieu, General Manager, Digital Imaging at Corel. "Corel is committed to providing its customers with the fastest, easiest and highest quality solution for their digital imaging needs. Combining the industry-leading automation capabilities of our Paint Shop Pro X software with Lexar's ActiveMemory System aligns precisely with what our customers want-less tinkering with technology to achieve perfect photos every time."

Using the ActiveMemory System is an easy, two-step process:

Download and automatically batch process photos - as photos are downloaded from the memory card using the Corel Photo Downloader, the script is also read and then used to batch process the downloaded images in Paint Shop Pro X. The batch processing can include steps such as adding IPTC/EXIF copyright data and applying the One Step Photo Fix. Because everything is scriptable in Paint Shop Pro X, the Lexar AMS processing can include anything that can be done in Paint Shop Pro X. Scripts can be easily created using PSP's "Record" feature, and can be easily changed using the graphical script editor.

Upload Script - users can easily combine any number of Paint Shop Pro X commands and save them as a script. The scripts are then uploaded to the ActiveMemory space reserved on the Lexar AMS-enabled flash memory card.

Since the Lexar ActiveMemory System preserves the AMS portion of memory, the script remains even after the card has been reformatted in the camera. As a result, the AMS card is always "automation-ready" until the photographer removes the script using Paint Shop Pro X.

"Partnering with Corel was a natural choice. Both companies were looking to make the digital imaging workflow more productive and satisfying for our customers," said Dave Klenske, director of product marketing, memory card business unit, Lexar. "By creating a technical link between Corel's Paint Shop Pro family of software and our Lexar ActiveMemory System, we are able to help our customers achieve the quality photos they want - with so much less time and energy dedicated to the process."

The Lexar ActiveMemory System is supported by the latest releases of Corel Paint Shop Pro (10.03 or later) and Corel Photo Album (6.3.4 or later).
