Ricoh GX200 12 Megapixel Digital Camera Announced

Ricoh GX 200-300px.jpgTokyo, Japan June, 24, 2008 Ricoh Co., Ltd. (president and CEO: Shiro Kondo) has announced today the development and release of the GX200. The GX200 is able to reproduce high quality images from edge-to-edge with low noise and natural gradation. This camera succeeds the award winning Caplio GX100 compact digital camera introduced in April 2007.

The GX200 inherits the popular features of the GX100 such as a 24 to 72 mm (35 mm film equivalent focal length) high-performance wide-angle optical zoom lens on a 25 mm thin pocketable compact body, a wide variety of manual shooting functions, and a removable tilting electronic viewfinder. The new GX200 achieves increased resolution via its 12 megapixel CCD and dramatic noise reduction with the addition of the new image processing engine Smooth Imaging Engine III.

Already a popular part of the Caplio GX100, the high-resolution wide-angle lens unit has been further configured to enable picture taking at an even higher resolution.

With a large wide-viewing angle 2.7-inch 460,000 dots HVGA LCD and an electronic level function, for horizontal and vertical shooting, the GX200 contains extensive shooting functions to enable camera lovers to enjoy and create stunning photographs.

This model comes in two package types with different accessories. The GX200 package contains: rechargeable lithium ion battery, battery charger, AV cable, USB cable, CD-ROM, strap, and lens cap. The GX200 VF KIT package contains all the above accessories plus the electronic viewfinder.

*The lens focal lengths used in this document are the equivalent focal length for a 35 mm camera.

Main features of the new Ricoh GX200

1. Greater image quality through use of a 12 megapixel CCD, a new image processing engine and continuous RAW mode capture.

• An effective 12 megapixel high-performance 1/1.7-inch CCD has been newly installed, with each pixel comes increased resolution.

• The adoption of a new image processing engine Smooth Imaging Engine III allows for greater control over the noise reduction process by the photographer without sacrificing resolution or saturation.

• High image quality combined with a lens with greater backlight capability*.

• *This is the 24 to 72 mm equivalent wide-angle zoom lens mounted on the previous model (Caplio GX100). It features a generous configuration of 11 elements in 7 groups, including superior aspheric surface lenses and high-refractive-index, low-dispersion lenses. This optimal configuration restricts distortion, chromatic aberration, and light falloff at edges for wide-angle operation while delivering aperture light settings from F2.5 (wide) to F4.4 (tele-photo). In addition, ghosting has been further reduced through the improvements made to the lens unit.

2. Large, high-resolution 2.7-inch, 460,000-dots HVGA LCD.

• The new 2.7-inch, 460,000-dots high-resolution LCD has a wide viewing angle and high contrast for distinct, easy viewing even outdoors. When thumbnail images are displayed, even the small 1/20 size images are clearly reproduced.

3. Electronic level utilizing an acceleration sensor to help keep the camera body horizontally or vertically level.

• If the level setting is set on, when the camera is level, the level indicator becomes green in the picture display. Being able to check whether the image is level while looking at the display can be useful for keeping the camera level when composing pictures of landscapes, buildings, and other scenes where the horizon is visible.

• It is possible to check whether the camera is level using the level sound setting.

• The electronic level can also be utilized while using the viewfinder.

4. Extensive shooting functions and high operability.

• Expanding buffer memory has made continuous shooting of up to five images possible in RAW mode, and it is also now possible to use the bracketing function to automatically change exposure settings when shooting in RAW mode. Other expanded RAW shooting capabilities include the ability to shoot 1:1 aspect ratio (vertical/horizontal ratio) format photography in RAW mode.

• The number of mode dial “My Settings” options for defining your own shooting settings has increased to three. (There were two on the Caplio GX100.)

• There are now one-push mode change function buttons both on the top surface and as one of the rear-surface cross keys. These buttons can be used for customized settings to, for example, to switch from JPEG to RAW or from colour to B&W. You can switch quickly to your preferred shooting mode when confronted with a sudden photo opportunity.

• The AF target shift function, which before could only be used in macro shooting, is now also available in normal shooting. Without moving the camera, it is possible to shift the target for AF or AE or both.

• The flash is manually raised by sliding the open switch. Flash functions on the GX200 have been further expanded with a light intensity adjustment function (-2.0 EV to +2.0 EV), a manual flash function in which intensity can be set, and a flash synchro setting where flash timing can be set as „1st Curtain“ or „2nd Curtain.“

• An auto rotate function makes it easier to view images on the picture display.

• Even when shooting in high-contrast situations, the camera can use an auto level correction function to achieve an appropriate level of brightness while reducing areas that are overly bright or dark.

• There is a distortion correction function (on/off selection possible) to automatically correct image distortion during shooting also usable with 19 mm conversion lens.

• When in aperture priority mode, an auto aperture shift function will automatically adjust the aperture setting to prevent overexposure.

5. Enhanced image editing functions enable images to be manipulated in the camera.

(1) Image colour tone correction (white balance compensation).
• By adjusting green, magenta, blue, and amber tones, still image colour tone can be corrected, with the corrected image being recorded in the camera.

(2) Image brightness and contrast correction (level compensation).
• Still image brightness and contrast can be corrected with either auto or manual modes, with the corrected image being recorded in the camera. With manual correction, the image is corrected by adjusting the histogram.

(3) Wide range of creative monochrome possibilities.
• Colour, colour density, contrast, and sharpness can each be defined on a five-level scale.

• Sepia, red, green, blue, and purple colour selections are possible.

6. Additional options further expand possibilities for camera use.

• Lens cap (LC-1) opens and closes automatically in sync with lens movement.

• 135 mm equivalent tele conversion lens (TC-1) with built-in hood. Filter attachment possible.

When the tele conversion lens is attached, vignetting will occur when the zoom is not set to full telephoto.

*The above two options can also be used on the Caplio GX100.

7. Removable electronic viewfinder can be attached.

• A removable and tiltable electronic viewfinder can be attached (included in GX200 VF KIT).

• The field of view provides 100% coverage without parallax and can display the same information as on the LCD picture display.

• It is convenient for shooting in bright outdoor environments and enables shooting to be done in a conventional film camera style.

RICOH G600 – water and dust-resistant for outdoor use

Ricoh G600 300px.jpgApril 22, 2008, Tokyo – Ricoh Co., Ltd. (president and CEO: Shiro Kondo) has launched the G600, a new water and dust-resistant digital camera which will now be available along with the popular Caplio 500G Wide (launched in May 2006).

The G600 is smaller and lighter yet it still passes Ricoh‘s shock resistance test for a 1.5 m fall, a test that conforms to US Department of Defense standards. In addition to the 5x optical wide-angle zoom lens (equivalent to 28-140 mm for a 35 mm camera), the G600 continues to provide the same strong set of features as previous models, such as a 1 cm macro function and a flash range of 10 m. It is perfect for customers who want to take pictures in a variety of outdoor activities, such as marine sports, mountain climbing, and fishing.

Main features of the Ricoh G600

1. Superior water and dust resistance plus even greater shock resistance make the G600 ideal for hard outdoor use.

A shock resistant structure and stronger camera cone create a robust body able to withstand falls from 1.5 m onto 26 surfaces, in compliance with US Department of Defense “MIL Standard 810F” (previous models withstood 1.0 m). The G600 is able to cope with rough handling outdoors.

The G600 boasts the same impressive water resistance as its predecessor’s, surpassing JIS protection grade 7 performance. Besides taking pictures in the rain, it can even take pictures underwater at depths of up to about 1 m.

Dust resistance satisfies JIS protection grade 6. Pictures can be taken in environments, such as the seashore, where there are high concentrations of sand or dust.
The well thought out design and positioning of the large buttons make operation easy even with gloves on, such as while skiing.

2. Powerful flash with effective range of up to 10m and ISO3200 sensitivity for low-light photography.

The flash has an effective range of up to 10 m for wide-angle and 6.5 m for telephoto.

The new ISO 3200 capability expands the range of scenes that can be photographed (previous model‘s maximum sensitivity was ISO 1600).

There is also an accessory shoe where an external flash can be attached.

3. Large 2.7-inch picture display.

A large, high-definition 2.7-inch picture display is included. This enables accurate photography by making the picture display easier to see outdoors.

A light sensor has been installed so that picture display brightness can be automatically adjusted based on ambient light level.

4. Compact and lightweight body that can be carried in a breast pocket.

Compact body size of 116.5 mm (W) × 68.0 mm (H) × 32.0 mm (D). Light weight of 260 g (Previous model dimensions 133.05 mm (W) × 78.5 mm (H) × 74.0 mm (D); weight approx. 400 g.

The flat design uses a non-protruding inner-zoom lens so that the lens does not extend out from the body regardless of whether the power is on or off.

A neck strap attachment to the camera body means that as well as horizontal suspension, vertical suspension is now possible, making it easy to store the camera in a shirt or jacket breast pocket while the strap is still around your neck.

5. A 28-140 mm wide-zoom lens on a water and dust-resistant digital camera.

The wide-zoom lens, equivalent to 28-140 mm, has been popular on other models. It can cover the whole of a large building and frame group pictures well in confined areas, and the 5x optical zoom can reach subjects it is not possible to shoot from close by. For even wider shots, there is an optional wide conversion lens equivalent to 22 mm. Size 37 mm filters can also be attached.

6. Popular features from other models have been incorporated into the G600.

The large-capacity lithium ion battery provided with the camera gives long battery life for approximately 360 shots (CIPA standard). If the battery runs out, readily available AAA size batteries can be used instead. An optional AC adapter can be used indoors, so three different power sources are available.

Macro mode gets as close as 1cm from the subject.
When the camera is connected to a personal computer via a USB cable, it is recognized as an external storage device, so images in the camera can be transferred to the computer without using special software. Full, automatic transfer is also available with the special software.

The high-quality CCD has an effective 10 million pixels.
Skew correction mode can modify photographs taken at an angle so that they look as if they were shot from the front. This is a powerful tool for various situations, such as images shot for message boards and display panels.

The G600 is compliant with the PictBridge standard that allows direct connection to a printer without routing through a personal computer. More diverse printing is possible, such as printing on forms registered in the printer, when connected to Ricoh’s high-speed colour laser printers and MFP*.

An edit check function detects for image data tampering. This increases the reliability of the data when digital photographic images are submitted as corroborative evidence.

RICOH GR Digital II Creative Set

February 2008 – RICOH INTERNATIONAL B.V. launches the new “GR DIGITAL II Creative Set” thus emphasising once again the exceptional properties of this compact digital camera system. Along with the GR DIGITAL II the Creative Set includes the wide angle converter 0.75x (GW-1), the lens hood with adapter (GH-1), the new external viewfinder (GV-2) as well as a leather camera case for the camera with attached viewfinder (GV-2) and strap (ST-2).

Like its multi-award winning predecessor, the GR DIGITAL, the GR DIGITAL II impresses with its uncompromising image quality and professional performance. Supported by the image processor GR Engine II, the newly developed CCD sensor with a resolution of 10.01 million pixels stands for extremely detailed resolution, natural colour and tonal value reproduction as well as a drastic reduction in noise even with high ISO sensitivity.

The GR DIGITAL II is highly esteemed by both committed hobby photographers and professional users especially because of its light-intensive 2.4/5.9 mm GR lens (35mm equivalent: 28mm). Due to the extreme sharpness of its image and its minimal distortion value, this lens exploits to the full the performance range of this top class digital camera.

The classic body which is only 25mm thick and is constructed from a magnesium alloy is robust and ergonomically designed to support confident handling in any photographic situation. The new functions of the GR DIGITAL II are practice-oriented, e.g. the electronic alignment aid for landscape and portrait shots or the three photo formats (4:3, 3:2 and 1:1) to chose from, all of which all enable storage in RAW mode.

The versatility of the GR DIGITAL II, however, is especially enhanced by the accessories included in the exclusive GR DIGITAL II Creative Set. Thus the wide angle converter perfectly complements the GR high-performance lens with its focal length of 28mm. It reduces the focal distance by a factor of 0.75x to the super-wide angle focal distance of 21mm and is therefore especially suitable for photos of sweeping landscapes, city perspectives or shots of large groups of people. Needless to say, the wide angle converter is perfectly adjusted to suit the performance of the GR lens. The main strength of the compact optical viewfinder GV-2 is its ability to capture a motif quickly even under difficult lighting conditions which makes it possible to hold the camera in a way analogous to 35mm cameras.

GR DIGITAL II Creative Set – the professional camera system for extreme quality requirements.

Contents of the GR Digital II Creative Set:
Camera GR DIGITAL II, Rechargeable lithium-ion battery (DB-60), Battery charger (BJ-6), Wide angle converter (GW-1), External viewfinder (GV-2), Lens hood & adapter (GH-1), Leather case (GC-2) and Strap (ST-2)

RICOH Caplio GX100 Creative Set

February 2008 – RICOH INTERNATIONAL B. V. presents the Caplio GX100 Creative Set, which perfectly complements the outstanding characteristics of this compact digital camera which has always obtained excellent results in tests carried out by renowned institutions and trade journals. Along with the Caplio GX100, the kit includes the exclusive electronic LCD viewfinder (VF-1), the wide angle converter 0.8x (DW-6), the lens hood with adapter (HA-2), the leather case (SC-45) and the strap (ST-2).

The Caplio GX100 is the perfect digital compact camera for photographers wishing to realise their creative photographic ideas in excellent image quality. In combination with the innovative Ricoh image processor “Smooth Imaging Engine II”, extremely impressive low noise digital photos can be created with opulent details and brilliant colours.

A further advantage of the Caplio GX100 is its optical features. The light-intensive 2.5-4.4/5.1-15.3 mm wide angle zoom lens corresponds to a focal distance of 24-72 with a 35mm camera. Using aspherical lens elements and glass types with a high refractive index, the camera provides optimal image quality in all focal ranges. The integrated CCD shift image stabilising function reduces the risk of camera shake which is a major advantages especially in bad lighting conditions.

All relevant camera functions can be set automatically or manually depending on the preferences of the photographer. The operating elements are practice-oriented and functional and provide the photographer with optimal control over the functions at all times. The body of the Caplio GX100 which is only 25mm thick is both robust and functional and its high-quality materials communicate straight away the professional character of a top-class model.

The Caplio GX100 Creative Set extends photographic possibilities considerably. The electronic, rotatable LCD viewfinder (VF-1) not only provides a parallax-free field of view with 100% picture content but also displays all important information at the same time. This is the perfect complement to the 2.5 inch LCD monitor at the back of the camera. Impressive super-wide angle shots are ensured by the wide angle converter (DW-6) which has been especially adapted to the performance of the Caplio GX100. This increases the already considerable wide angle range of the camera from a focal distance of 24mm to 19mm.

The lens hood with adapter (HA-2), the leather case (SC-45) for the Caplio GX100 with attached electronic LCD viewfinder and the practical shoulder strap round off the Creative Set perfectly.

Ricoh Caplio R6 Announced

Ricoh Caplio R6.jpgTokyo, Japan – March 1, 2007 – Ricoh Co., Ltd. (president and CEO: Masamitsu Sakurai) has developed and launched the new Caplio R6 digital camera featuring a 7.1x optical wide zoom lens (28–200 mm in 35 mm camera format) packed into a slim body just 20.6 mm at its thinnest point.

The new Caplio R6 exhibits features such as a 7.1x wide zoom and high performance CCD-shift vibration correction from the Caplio R5 (open priced, launched September 15, 2006, featuring 7.24 megapixel CCD). Vibration Correction eliminates the shake from hand movement, which is the main cause of blurry images. The Caplio R6 also incorporates advancements over its predecessor with new features such as a slim body 20.6 mm at its thinnest point (26 mm for the Caplio R5) and a face recognition mode that automatically recognizes the subject’s face or faces and records the image at the optimal settings. In addition to functional improvements, the Caplio R6 adopts the Caplio R5’s design image while creating an anticipation of high performance through new design features. Those features include generous use of metal to house the lens, a distinctive strap attachment, and curves on the top. The Caplio R6 also features improved feel of robustness and texture.

*As of February 21st 2007. Among compact cameras with 28 mm (35 mm camera format) 5x or greater optical wide zoom lenses.

Main features of the new Caplio R6
1. 7.1x wide-angle zoom lens in the slimmest body in this class of camera, measuring in at a mere 20.6 mm at its thinnest point

• By completely rethinking the design of the double retracting lens system – an original mechanism that makes it possible to equip the Caplio R6 with a 28-200mm optical zoom lens in a 20.6mm thin body – all parts could be miniaturized through Ricoh’s own technology at 0.01 mm levels.

• The lens setup was optimized by employing highly refractive glass lenses along with the double retracting lens system and by optimizing the distribution of thickness in the lens assembly.

• A wide range of photographic options are supported from panoramic landscapes and wide-angle photography and indoor shooting under low light near the subject to impressive telephoto photography.

2. New face recognition mode that automatically identifies faces
to photograph people easily and clearly

• The face recognition mode for automatically recognizing and identifying faces uses a Ricoh-original algorithm to differentiate overall facial characteristics from other images viewed in the scene, thereby automatically detecting faces. Focus, exposure, and white balance are automatically adjusted to fit the face even if the subject is not in the centre of the frame.

• If more than one person is in the frame, adjustments are automatically made that are optimum for the group as a whole.

3. Attention to high-quality design

• On top of great portability, design features such as generous use of metal around the lens, a distinctive strap attachment, and curves on the top create an anticipation of high performance. The Caplio R6 also sports an improved feel of robustness and texture.

4. Well-received vibration correction function as well as a variety of other innovations to prevent poor pictures from situations such as being out of focus or white saturation occurring

• Improvements have been made to the correction algorithm for the Ricoh-original CCD-shift vibration correction method for picture taking at macro and telephoto.

• A new feature in quick review lets you enlarge the image 16 times at the touch of a button. That way, you can check that the shot was in focus right away.

• A new function has been added to prevent white saturation by highlighting and flashing in quick review and playback areas with high luminance values when photographing.

• An auto high sensitivity mode has been added to allow clear shots in dark places. Sensitivity can be raised up to ISO 1600 depending on the brightness of the subject. Coupled with the vibration correction function, this gives even better blur prevention.

5. High picture quality photography through high-performance CCD
and image processing engine

• The 7.24 megapixel CCD allows for high-resolution photography.

• High-level image processing is achieved and images with low noise are produced through an original image processing engine that operates at speed. Thanks to that, even photography at ISO 1600 sensitivity is possible.

6. Diverse range of original functions

• The dual size recording mode allows you to record two files at the same time with one shot: a normal sized

image and a reduced size image. You can choose from 1 megapixel, VGA, HVGA, or QVGA for the reduced size. This is convenient for using photos on the Internet such as when attaching to e-mail or placing in blogs.

• Internal memory is boosted to 54 MB (26 MB with Caplio R5). This lets you take 34 shots at 7M size normal mode even without a memory card.

• Multiple individual files can be selected for deletion. Furthermore deleted files can even be recovered with the new File Recovery feature.

• You can skip 10 images forward or backward in playback. This lets you quickly search for the image you want when many images are stored on large-capacity memory.

• A Ricoh-original macro mode allows close-in shooting of objects at as close as 1 cm with wide macro and as close as 25 cm with telemacro. A Zoom Macro function is included to allow use of digital zooming from the optical zoom position where subjects can be captured at their largest.

• The Caplio R6 includes an Auto Resize function that automatically changes the image size when shooting at 7M size and zooming in excess of 200 mm optical. This enables high zoom photography of up to 34.1x* (equivalent to 960 mm) at high image quality without image correction processing. It is also equipped with
general digital zoom.

* at VGA image siz

7. Large, high-resolution LCD

• The Caplio R6 has a bright, high-resolution, high viewing angle 2.7-inch LCD (Caplio R5 LCD is 2.5 inches).

8. Long-life rechargeable battery for approx. 330 shots under CIPA standards
(standard accessory)

• The power-saving features of the internal circuit allow for a battery life equivalent to previous models, even with the smaller battery in the slimmer Caplio R6

9. Skew Correction function

• Through an original algorithm that automatically detects trapezoids in images based on composition wh it
shooting and corrects them to rectangles, images can be corrected to look as though they were shot from the front. The function is most effective in business environments where subjects such as blackboards, overhead projector images, time schedules, and signs cannot be shot from the front.

Accessories included:
Rechargeable Battery DB-70 / Battery Charger BJ-7 / USB Cable / AV Cable / Handstrap / Software CD-Rom / Instruction Manuals

2. 7.1x wide-angle zoom lens (the largest in the compact class) and vibration correction function in a body only 26 mm thick and weighing approx. 140 grams.

The well-received 28-200 mm 7.1x wide-angle zoom lens from the preceding model has been fitted into a body of just 26 mm. The lens supports a wide range of photographic options from panoramic landscapes to wide-angle photography and indoor shooting under low light close to the subject to impressive telephoto photography.
Furthermore, the Caplio R5 includes an Auto Resize function that automatically changes the image size when shooting at 7M size and zooming in excess of 200 mm optical. This enables high zoom photography of up to 34.1x *(equivalent to 960 mm) at high image quality without image correction processing.

*at VGA image size (E-mail size)

Also equipped with general digital zoom.

Whenever it detects excessive camera motion, the vibration correction system, based on Ricoh’s own CCD shift method, moves the CCD in the opposite direction to counterbalance camera shake. This results in the ability to take clear telephoto shots at high zoom magnification, macro shots and indoor shots.

3. Further improvements to stress-free response.

Release time lag (the time from the instant the shutter button is fully pressed – without using focus lock – until exposure actually starts) is as short as approx. 0.09 seconds* (with vibration correction off). Quick responses are essential in order to capture picture-perfect and near-instantaneous moments such as the expressions and movement of children or pets. Thus the short time lag means stress-free, near-instantaneous shots.
Time from depressing the shutter button with focus locked (half-press) until exposure actually starts is a speedy 0.007 seconds*.
Shooting interval (with vibration correction off) and start time are both rapid, at approx. 0.5 and 1.2 seconds*, respectively.
Continuous shooting speed is improved to 2.8 frames/second*. In addition, shots can be taken at best image quality until memory is full. Furthermore, those images shot can be displayed on the LCD while shooting.

*measured while the flash is off

4. Large, high-resolution high angle shooting LCD.

The Caplio R5 has a 2.5-inch LCD with 230,000 pixels compared to 150,000 pixels for the Caplio R4. The brightness of the LCD makes it easier to see outdoors even on sunny days from greater viewing angles.

5. Long-life rechargeable battery for approx. 380 shots (standard accessory).

Thanks to the power-saving features of the internal circuit, the battery has a longer life. This makes it possible to capture approx. 380 images under CIPA standards (approx. 330 pictures for the Caplio R4).

6. Powerful macro function – a Ricoh specialty.

The camera’s macro mode allows close in shooting of objects from a wide macro 1 cm to tele macro 14 cm.
A Zoom Macro function is included to allow use of digital zooming from the optical zoom position where subjects can be captured at their largest.

7. Your favorite settings in scene modes.

Up to two setting conditions of your choice can be saved to scene modes with the Personalized Setting function. That allows you to apply your own settings to scene modes to enable easier photography at your favorite settings.

8. Enhanced Skew Correction function for corrections after shooting.

Through an original algorithm that automatically detects trapezoids in images based on composition when shooting and corrects them to rectangles, images can be corrected to look as though they were shot from the front. The function is most effective in business environments where subjects such as blackboards, overhead projector images, time schedules and signs cannot be shot from the front.
The improved function now allows for correction after the image has been taken in play back mode.

9. A portable and beautiful design with an eye to robustness and quality.

The design combines functionality and texture with such features as a comfortable grip, easy-to-use controls, high-grade materials, and surface finishing in a compact body of 96 mm (W) x 55 mm (H) x 26 mm (D). With emphasis on robustness and quality, the camera embodies reliability and functionality.

Ricoh Caplio 500G Wide - Water, dust and shock resistant

ricoh-Caplio500gwide.bmpRicoh are proud to announce the launch of the Caplio 500G Wide. This model has the same characteristic tough body of its predecessor, the Caplio 400G with superior water and dust resistance, a wide-angle optical 3x zoom (equivalent to 28-85mm for a 35mm camera), and support for linkage with Construction CALS and other business systems. It goes further, however, with new features, such as more rugged impact resistance, a flash range of 10m, and an antiblur function. It is designed specially for customers who will use it on construction sites, for insurance loss appraisal in disaster areas, in schools, and in other outdoor situations.

Ricoh has been the leader in water and dust-resistant digital cameras since the launch of the Ricoh RDC-100G in July 1999, and the launch of the 500G consolidates their dominance in the field.

Major Features of the Caplio 500G Wide

1. Superior water and dust resistance plus shock resistance, making it ideal for hard outdoor use.
A shock resistant structure and stronger camera cone create a robust body able to withstand falls from 1m onto 26 surfaces, in compliance with US Department of Defense “MIL Standard 810F” (previous models withstood 90cm). It can cope with rough handling outdoors. The Caplio 500G Wide boasts the same impressive water resistance as its predecessor’s, surpassing JIS protection grade 7 performance. Besides taking pictures in the rain, it can even take pictures underwater in depths of up to 1m. Dust resistance satisfies JIS protection grade 6. Pictures can be taken in environments with high concentrations of dust and sand. The skilful placement of large buttons makes operation easy, even with gloves on.

2. New flash has an effective range of up to 10m.
The high-capacity flash has an effective range of up to 10m for wide-angle and 6.5m for telephoto, broadening the range of photographic opportunities. (Previous models effective flash range went up to 5m).

3. New antiblur function.
The antiblur function raises ISO sensitivity to allow photography at faster shutter speeds. This feature is superbly effective for photography indoors and in other dark situations.

4. 28-85mm wide-zoom lens.
The wide-zoom lens, equivalent to 28-85mm, was also popular on previous models. It can cover the whole of a large building, or frame pictures well in confined areas, while the 3x optical zoom can reach subjects that are too inaccessible to shoot from closer. For even wider shots, there is an optional wide conversion lens that is equivalent to 22mm.

5. CALS mode and other features are ideal for electronic data in construction work.
The CALS mode switches immediately to the optimum picture quality for electronic delivery to construction CALS (1,280x960 resolution, edge sharpening). The Camera Memo function can be used to attach memos, containing information such as the location, to the photograph data. Such memos facilitate later searching and cataloguing of images. The high sense mode can monitor subjects clearly, even in dark place. It’s easy to take pictures at night, or in dim locations such as indoors and inside ducting. It also handles fire fighting-related work on fi re scenes.

6. Optical viewfinder and large 2.5 inch LCD monitor.
The large, high-detail 2.5 inch LCD monitor is a new addition. There is also an optical viewfinder, so the photographer can use whichever is right for the situation, for more reliable photography.

7. Diverse useful features.
Superior response time with only 0.10 seconds elapsing between pressing the shutter and the start of exposure, and start-up time of approximately 1.2 seconds (when the flash is off). The large-capacity
lithium ion battery provided with the camera gives battery life long enough for 400 continuous shots (CIPA standard). If the battery runs out AA-size batteries can be used instead, and an optional AC
adapter can be used indoors. Able to use three power sources. Macro mode gets as close as 1cm from the subject. Skew correction mode can compensate for photographs taken at an angle, so that they look as if they were shot from the front. Performs powerfully in various situations, such as message boards and display panels. When the camera is connected to the personal computer via a USB cable, it is recognized as an external storage device, so images in the camera can be transferred to the computer without using special software. Single-action transfer is also available from the special software. The Caplio 500G Wide is compliant with the PictBridge standard that allows direct connection to a printer without routing through a personal computer. More diverse printing is possible, such as printing onto forms registered to the printer, when connected to Ricoh’s high-speed colour laser printers and MFP*.

Please visit www.ricoh.com for compatible models. The high-quality CCD has an effective 8.13 million pixels.

Main Features of the Caplio R40:

1. The newly developed Double Retracting Lens System makes it possible to fit a 5.7x (28-160mm in 35mm) wide zoom lens into the R40’s slim body, which is at a mere 26mm deep fits comfortable into the pocket.

• Ricoh’s innovative Double Retracting Lens System, newly developed from the original Retracting Lens System, allows the lens assembly to be stored in the camera body during lens storage. This enables the 26 mm body to hold a 5.7x wide zoom lens (28-160 mm in 35-mm equivalent).

• The highly versatile Caplio R40 delivers outstanding results in practically any photographic situation. These vary from sweeping landscapes to indoor shots needing a wide-angle 28mm lens to capture close-ups using 160mm telephoto.

2. The macro function, a Ricoh hallmark, has been further enhanced.

• The R40 features a top-of-its-class macro mode, enabling users to photograph an object from as close as just 1 cm and opening up a whole new world of photographic opportunity.

• The Zoom Macro Function automatically sets the focal distance of the lens at the optimum distance for capturing an object as large and close-up as possible.

• If AF Target Selection is used, it is even possible to focus on different objects without moving the camera.

3. Rapid response for stress-free shooting.

Release time lag (the time from the instant the shutter button is fully pressed – without engaging pre-focus – until exposure actually starts) is as fast as approximately 0.09 seconds. Quick response is essential in order to capture those brief, picture-perfect moments of which memories are made, such as the smile of a small child or the playfulness of a pet. The R40’s near-instantaneous reactions mean such shots are now within easy reach.

• Time calculated from the instant the focus is locked (half-press) until exposure actually starts is an astonishing 0.007 seconds.

• Shooting interval and start-up time (approx. 1.1 seconds) are both rapid (measured while the fl ash is off).

4. Long-life rechargeable battery and charger let you shoot approximately 350 pictures on a single charge.

The power-saving capability of the R40’s internal circuitry means it is possible to capture up to 350 separate images under CIPA standards using the long-life rechargeable battery and charger (included with the camera), even while using the large, high-resolution 2.5-inch LCD display.

5. High-definition pictures thanks to a 6-megapixel CCD coupled with Ricoh’s original image processing engine.

• The zoom macro function automatically sets the focal distance of the lens at the optimum distance for capturing an image of each object as large and close as possible.
• If AF Target Selection is used, it is even possible to focus on objects within the frame without moving the camera. By determining the optimum field of view, taking into consideration such information as the size or contrast of the object, focusing accuracy becomes that much higher when shooting in macro.

High speed response capability
• Release time lag (the time from the instant the shutter button is fully pressed – without using focus lock – until exposure actually starts) is as fast as approx. 0.09 seconds on average. Quick responses are essential in order to capture picture-perfect but near-instantaneous moments such as the expressions and movement of children or pets. Now stress-free, near-instantaneous shots are possible.
• Time calculated from the instant the focus is locked (half-press) until exposure actually starts is a miraculous 0.007 seconds on average.
• Shooting interval and start time are both rapid, approx. 0.5 and 1.1 seconds, respectively (measured while the flash is off).

The skew correction function
• Through an original algorithm, which automatically detects trapezoids in images and corrects them to rectangles, images of such things as blackboards, documents, or time schedules shot at any angle can be corrected so that the image looks as though it were shot from the front. The camera is most effective in business environments where blackboards, over head projector, OHPs, time schedules, signs, etc. cannot be shot from the front.

A design combining style with portability
• The design combines functionality and texture with such features as a comfortable grip, easy-to-use controls, high-grade materials, surface finishing, and a compact body of 95.0 mm (W) x 53.0 mm (H) x 26.0 mm (D).

Ricoh announces GR Digital Camera

Ricoh announced today the launch of the GR Digital, a newly developed professional-grade high-resolution compact digital camera. In addition to a CCD with 8,130,000 effective pixels, the new digital camera boasts superb resolution through a newly developed high-performance lens, image-processing algorithms, and other innovations, as well as low noise and low chromatic aberration.

The new GR Digital inherits the superb image quality that made the award winning GR Series (first launched in 1996) of 35mm compact film cameras so popular, as well as the depictive performance to satisfy professional photographers, distilled into a compact 25-mm thin body.
With a high-quality feel and superb expandability, this is the perfect tool for both professional photographers and advanced amateurs.

When planning the GR Digital, Ricoh’s engineers began by identifying the elements needed to provide the high picture quality demanded by discerning photographers. After extensive tests and research, Ricoh placed special emphasis on resolution, noise level, colour aberration correction, colour reproduction, tone, and distortion characteristics. In order to achieve extremely high levels in each of these areas, Ricoh gave the GR Digital a CCD with 8,130,000 effective pixels, and also developed two key components: (1) a F2.4 fixed focal length GR lens with f = 5.9 mm (28 mm converted to 35 mm format camera) having high resolution and depictive power; and (2) a new GR Engine image-processing system featuring natural composition and rich, fine gradations while further lowering noise in all images.

These key components in turn translate into a high Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) rating for the central area of the image as well as the edges. MTF is a measure of contrast and resolution, and one of the most widely used standards for evaluating image quality. The GR Digital has the descriptive power to show each hair on a person's head, with superb reproductive capability all the way into the corners of the picture. The GR Digital’s images also reduce noise, giving greater continuity in dark areas, reproduces natural tones and gradations, and reduces blurring and distortion.
